JOB SUMMARY
The Streets Equipment Operator I operates a variety of heavy equipment to support the construction, maintenance, and repair of the City’s street infrastructure. The role plays a key part in ensuring safe and reliable roadways by performing milling and paving operations, repairing sidewalks and curbs, and completing pothole and surface repairs. Through skilled equipment operation and high-quality workmanship, this position helps maintain essential transportation routes and contributes to the overall safety and mobility of the community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Perform manual labor to support street maintenance, operations, and construction
- Utilize a variety of heavy equipment (e.g., dump trucks, loaders, rollers, paving machines, milling machines, street sweepers) and power tools (e.g., jackhammers, chainsaws, chippers, bucket trucks) to complete assigned projects
- Prepare streets and roadways for paving; haul, process, and compact road materials; perform milling and paving activities
- Repair sidewalks, curbs, and potholes; maintain ditches and drainage areas; clear debris from rights-of-way
- Trim trees and shrubbery to ensure safe and unobstructed passage
- Provide traffic control for construction activities, emergency situations, parades, and special events
- Assist with surveying work
- Provides on-call support and assists other City departments as needed; performs other related duties as assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- One (1) year of experience operating street, drainage, or traffic maintenance work.
- A Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License is required within one (1) year of employment. A Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) is required within 90 days of employment.
- Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
COMPETENCIES AND ENVIRONMENT
- Knowledge of how to read and comprehend routine maintenance documentation to ensure accurate execution of work tasks.
- Skill in verbal and written communication.
- Ability to maintain effective and positive working relationships with City staff, vendors, and the general public.
- Ability to cross train and perform work across multiple maintenance disciplines to support operational flexibility and service continuity.
- Ability to make independent decisions in the field to safely and efficiently complete assigned tasks and respond to changing operational needs.
