Under general supervision of the Battalion Chief, the incumbent provides fire suppression, emergency medical services, and emergency responses to the residents of the City of San Luis.

As a Firefighter, you will:


  • Respond to fire, medical, and other emergency calls for assistance.
  • Extinguish fires and conducts search and rescue operations.
  • Operate fire and rescue vehicles, equipment, and pumps.
  • Assess medical needs, provides basic emergency medical care, and transports patients to the hospital.
  • Check assigned apparatus for medical supplies and equipment and cleans and disinfects vehicle and equipment.
  • Perform operator-level inspection, servicing, fueling, and maintenance of assigned tools, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Conduct inspections of commercial/residential/industrial facilities for fire hazards and regulatory compliance.
  • Prepare routine, periodic, special reports in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Perform general housekeeping of the fire station and surrounding grounds.
  • Conduct community education programs for fire prevention, safety, CPR, and First Aid.
  • Attend educational and physical training sessions.
  • Provide public assistance and performs special duties as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Will possess the knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of fire prevention and emergency response activities.
  • Relevant Federal/State/County/City codes, laws, and regulations related to fire/emergency protection and response and emergency medical services.
  • Emergency medical care and hazardous materials handling and cleanup.
  • Principles and practices of leadership.
  • Principles and practices of building construction.
  • Street names, topography, location, access, and hydrant locations.
  • Operation of fire engine, pumps, aerial ladders and fire equipment.
  • Computers and specialized hardware and software for preparing reports and maintaining records.
 
Will have the ability to:
  • Think and act quickly and effectively in emergencies, and under stressful situations.
  • Manage emergency situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and impartially.
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Prepare and maintain records and reports.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and interacting with the public.
Education, Training & Experience:
  • A High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Licenses & Certification:

All Licenses and Certifications required must be maintained throughout employment.
  • A valid Arizona driver’s license.
  • State of Arizona Hazardous Materials First Responders Awareness (FRA) & Hazardous Materials First Responders Operations (FRO), Firefighter I & II or other certifications that meet the prerequisite certification requirements for Firefighter.
  • Certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) OR 
  • Certified Emergency Paramedic.

Special Requirements:
  • Residency in the United States and within 25 miles of the City of San Luis.
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule.

Desired/Preferred: 
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
  • San Luis residency.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, walk, sit and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and or move equipment and/or persons weighing up to 150 pounds. Employees must be physically capable of operating City vehicles, for job-related purposes, safely. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
 
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, an employee uses written and oral communication skills; reads and interprets data, information and documents; analyzes and solve problems; uses math and mathematical reasoning; observes and interprets situations; learns and applies new information or skills; and interacts with City staff, other organizations, and the public.

Work Environment: 
Work is performed in a standard office environment and in field environments during emergencies. May work in various outside weather conditions and be exposed to extremely hazardous conditions and materials. 

This job is classified as Safety Sensitive, and subject to Federal and state regulations.
