JOB SUMMARY:
To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled grounds, landscaping, gardening and general maintenance, repair, and construction work functions in the upkeep and maintenance of City parks and/or other City areas; and to operate and maintain specialized equipment related to assignment. Depending on assignment, positions in this classification may have primary responsibility for the upkeep and maintenance of designated parks or other recreational/City facilities; or the operation of specialized equipment in the maintenance of City park turf areas.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Incumbent receives supervision within a framework of well-defined policies and procedures.
Positions in this class may work independently at an assigned site on established tasks.
May direct and monitor the work of temporary or non City employees in a lead capacity.

- Plants, cultivates, trims, waters, and sprays ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, and flowers; prepares and treats soil for planting.
- Operates a variety of automotive and specialized equipment including truck, tractor, hydraulic boom truck and mowers; may operate and maintain a turf tractor, riding mower and dump truck.
- Operate power and hand tools such as blowers, mowers, edgers, sod cutters, aerifiers, and chain saws.
- Prepares and applies pesticides and herbicides to landscape areas.
- Performs a variety of general maintenance and repair work including carpentry, painting, welding and plumbing.
- Provides scheduled maintenance and repair of assigned equipment including removal, repair, and replacement of various parts and components, tune-ups, oil changes, blade sharpening, etc.
- Maintains assigned areas in clean and orderly condition; cleans rest rooms, picks up trash, clears walkways.
- Maintains playing fields; grooms and applies appropriate field markings following established guidelines.
- Maintains and repairs irrigation systems; installs and repairs sprinkler heads, lateral and main lines, valves, and controllers; programs central irrigation computer to efficiently irrigate landscape.
- Inspects assigned areas for vandalism and hazardous conditions; makes necessary repairs.
- Maintains records related to duties performed and equipment used.
- Performs related duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.
Knowledge of:
- Proper grounds maintenance and gardening methods, procedures, and techniques.
- Methods, materials, and practices utilized in general maintenance work.
- Grounds, gardening, and general maintenance materials, tools, and equipment and their safe use and maintenance.
- Safe and proper use and application of herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides.
- Safely and effectively perform semi-skilled and skilled grounds maintenance and gardening work.
- Perform general maintenance and construction work.
- Safely and effectively operate automotive and specialized equipment utilized in grounds maintenance and general construction work.
- Learn and effectively apply procedures and methods used in the repair and maintenance of assigned specialized equipment.
- Learn and apply industry standards associated with proper maintenance of sports turf as related to assignment.
- Maintain routine records.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties.
- Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
High School diploma or G.E.D.
and
Two years experience in the field of landscaping, construction or park maintenance.

An equivalent combination of education and experience.
POSSESSION AND MAINTENANCE OF:
- A valid Class "C" California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
- A valid Class "B" California driver's license within six months of hire.
Salary : $54,392 - $66,768
