The Department of Transportation is currently seeking to fill multiple part-time and full-time vacancies for the Maintenance Assistant position. Maintenance Assistant FT
Under immediate supervision, the Maintenance Assistant FT performs unskilled work in the maintenance and repair of streets, pavements, sewers, landscaping, traffic signs, and traffic signals. Duties include digging holes, trenches, and ditches. It also includes operating a wide range of hand, mechanical, and power tools, as well as a variety of light and heavy vehicles, trucks, and equipment relevant to work performed, ensuring compliance with safe working practices.
Maintenance crews provide services seven days a week. Individuals in this classification may be assigned a work shift, including grave and swing, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call.
Possess ability to:
- Move between/within work areas, including but not limited to sitting, standing, and walking on various surfaces, turning, bending, grasping, and making repetitive hand movements;
- Communicate in person and over the telephone or radio;
- Maintain professional demeanor during interactions with staff, customers and the public.
Physical/environmental elements include, but are not limited to:
- Maintain strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work;
- Lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects averaging a weight of 50 pounds, or heavier weights, in all cases with the use of proper equipment;
- Identify problems or hazards, work in confined spaces and around machines, and climb/descend ladders;
- Operate, inspect, and repair varied hand and power tools and construction equipment;
- Operate a motor vehicle and visit various City sites;
- Be exposed to unpredictable working conditions including but not limited to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances, fumes, dust, and air contaminants.

Maintenance Assistant PT (Meter Shop)
Under immediate supervision, the Maintenance Assistant PT (Meter Shop) performs unskilled work in the maintenance and repair of parking meters and operates a wide range of hand, mechanical, and power tools, and equipment relevant to work performed, ensuring compliance with safe working practices. This position requires long periods of walking outdoors, collecting parking meters.
This part-time position schedule is from 6:00am – 10:00am Monday through Friday.
Job Responsibilities include:
- Collect coins daily from parking meters using a three-wheel metal coin collection cart (up to 150 lbs) along a two-hour walking route, in all weather conditions.
- Drive or be transported to assigned collection routes.
- Maintain and repair on-street smart parking meters and their housings, including key and lock maintenance.
- Use hand tools and web-based databases to service-connected parking meters.
- Service parking ticket dispensing machines, following their unique maintenance protocols.
- Utilize a City-issued cell phone to access the internet, databases, and Maintenance App.
- Record and track completed work through the Maintenance App on your phone.
- Perform shop-based repairs and servicing of individual parking meters, including cleaning, recharging, testing, and replacing faulty parts.

Education: Completion of high school or equivalent (General Educational Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate).

Physical Requirement: Ability to perform the essential physical functions of this position will be determined by a post-offer medical examination conducted by the City of San José Employee Health Services.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Possession of a valid driver’s license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California; or
- possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements; or
- possession of a valid State of California Certified Commercial Applicator’s License.
As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver’s license with applicable endorsements is required.
Selected candidates will be required to submit a DMV Release of Driver Record Information form at the time of conditional offer and will be enrolled in the DMV Employer Pull Notice (EPN) Program. Refusal to do so will be considered withdrawing from the recruitment process.
