What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Engineer - Corrosion position at City of San Diego?

Assistant Engineer – Corrosion positions perform journey-level professional engineering work and may prepare engineering designs and specifications for corrosion control systems; prepare technical engineering studies; prepare bid documents; assist in data analysis; write routine reports and memos; perform field investigations and inspections; and perform other duties as assigned.
 
      NOTES:
  • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS). 
  • Assistant Engineer – Corrosion employees with valid State of California registration as a Professional Civil, Corrosion, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineer or an Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP formerly NACE)  CP-4 certification are eligible for 31% additional pay.
  • Assistant Engineer – Corrosion employees who do not have a valid State of California Professional Engineer registration but have a valid Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification that meets the requirements established by California's Department of Consumer Affairs, Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists or an Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) CP-2 or CP-3 certification are eligible for 8% additional pay. The employee's eligibility for EIT certification pay will end when he or she achieves state registration or AMPP CP-4 certification.
  • Assistant Engineer – Corrosion employees may be required to work at heights in excess of 120 feet, wearing a full body fall restraint harness, walk in rough terrain, work in the presence of high voltage electricity, perform minor construction tasks and work in OSHA permit required confined spaces for extended periods of time.
You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.
 
EDUCATION: You must meet ONE of the following options:
  1. Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering field.
  2. Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate issued from a state licensing board.
  3. Valid Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP), CP-2 Technician certification.
  4. Registration as a Professional Civil, Corrosion, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineer with a state licensing board.
      NOTE:
  • Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for education lacked on a year-for-year basis. One year of full-time experience = 30 semester/45 quarter college-level units.
EXPERIENCE: Two years of full-time professional corrosion engineering experience which MUST include preparation of design drawings and development of specifications for cathodic protection systems, and field inspection, testing, and troubleshooting of cathodic protection systems.

      NOTE:
  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
LICENSE:  A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.  
 
HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
  • Valid Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP), CP-2 Technician, CP-3 Technologist, or CP-4 Cathodic Protection Specialist certification.
  • Valid Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP), Coating Inspector Program (CIP) certification (e.g., CIP Level 1, 2, 3).
