The City of Salinas invites applicants for the temporary position of Public Service Maintenance Aide. This position will be in the Facilities Maintenance Division assisting with graffiti abatement. This a non-benefited position. Employees are limited to working a maximum of 25 hours per week and must not exceed 1,000 hours per fiscal year. This recruitment is open until filled and may close at any time.

Summary of Duties: Under direct supervision, performs a variety of routine, unskilled and repetitive maintenance duties, repairs in various divisions of Public Works as assigned. Performs related duties as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This in an entry-level position. Work performed at this level is of a routine, unskilled, and often repetitive nature. Receives direct supervision from higher-level personnel. No supervision is exercised over others.

Essential Job Functions

Public Works:
  • Washes street sweepers, pickup trucks, cars and equipment by hand and with a steam cleaner.
  • Cleans vehicle windows.
  • Checks cab area in vehicles for broken accessories.
  • Empties trash cans.
  • Cleans work area.
  • Sweeps floor.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Facilities Services:
  • Loads, unloads and receives supplies and equipment.
  • Delivers supplies and equipment to departments.
  • Cleans work area.
  • Sweeps floor.
  • Moves furniture.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Parks and Recreation:
  • Assists maintenance and recreation personnel to deliver and set up chairs, tables, booths, props, amplifying systems, and stages.
  • Cleans work area, restrooms, fountains, and public facilities.
  • Moves furniture and equipment.
  • Assists in planting, removing, and maintaining a variety of landscaping and shrubbery.
  • Mows, cleans and maintains parks and other facilities as directed.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Graffiti Abatement:
  • Removes graffiti and vandalism from City properties.
  • Helps select and order supplies.
  • Operates and maintains painting, landscaping, and repair equipment.
  • Performs routine maintenance and repairs vandalism in a timely manner.
  • May report criminal activity around City areas.
  • Monitors and reports homeless encampments.
  • Provides public assistance on park rules and safety.
  • Handles hazardous chemicals safely and disposes properly.
  • Performs other assigned tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:
  • Techniques and materials used in general maintenance and repair
  • Correct and effective use of landscape maintenance tools, equipment and materials
  • Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work
Ability to:
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Learn and abide by safety regulations
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships and deal tactfully with the public
  • Learn to operate a variety of small hand tools and equipment used in maintenance and repair
  • Learn to operate tools and simple equipment in a variety of maintenance activities
  • Learn to operate a variety of vehicles and mechanical equipment in a safe and efficient manner

Education: High school graduation or GED

Experience: Six (6) months of experience performing maintenance work.

Licenses and Certifications: Possession of a valid California driver's license

Supplemental Information

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Physical mobility and stamina to stand and walk for long periods of time, and to walk over uneven surfaces. Physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop and reach overhead. Physical strength to lift up to 50 pounds and up to 90 pounds with assistance. Manual dexterity sufficient to use hand and power tools. Hearing and speaking ability sufficient to converse over the telephone and in person, two-way radio and in person often over the noise of machinery and traffic, to detect and describe noises in machinery or to hear running water. Vision sufficient to read fine printed materials on labels, manuals, diagrams, to work with color-coded wires with no color deficiencies, and to drive. Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions.

Perform heavy manual labor for periods up to but not limited to 8 hours per day. Work outdoors under adverse conditions in heat, wind, cold and rain. Work in and around potentially hazardous substances, including pesticides, herbicides and motor fuel.

Employee must complete SB 1343 Sexual Harassment Prevention Training within six months of appointment and every two years thereafter.

Selection Process: Applicants’ qualifications will be evaluated based on the information provided on the employment application. The exam process may consist of an application appraisal, oral interview, assessment center and/or written exam. The City reserves the right to use alternate testing procedures if deemed necessary. Salary Steps: The following applies for Full-Time Regular positions only. Appointments are normally made at the first step. Consideration is given for increase to the second step after successful completion of the probationary period. (Employees appointed at a higher step will be eligible for consideration for the next step after one year, providing they successfully complete a probationary period.)
