The City of Salem is actively recruiting for a Seasonal Maintenance Worker in the Public Works Department. The Maintenance Worker position performs non-skilled manual work involving maintenance, repair, grounds keeping, construction activities, and operation of heavy equipment.

What you will do:
The successful candidate will perform a wide variety of day-to-day activities. Work requires repetitive manual labor and frequent operation of hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment. Most positions will require limited operation of pickup trucks or primarily used for transit to/from worksite. Some positions will require the frequent operation of heavy equipment to haul concrete, asphalts, and other debris or materials to/from worksite. Employees in this classification are responsible for following safety protocols, performing work to standards and ensuring work location is left clean and safe.
Additional information on job responsibilities:
- Use hand tools such as shovels and wheelbarrows to dig ditches or other holes such as for tree planting, move materials such as dirt, seed, fertilizer, or bark dust.
- Install signing, coning, or barriers as instructed, or flag traffic.
- Perform basic painting, carpentry, cement and asphalt work, and similar trades.
- Load and unload heavy material from trucks and vans, move or assist in moving heavy boxes or equipment and large bulky objects.
- Perform routine landscape maintenance such as mowing, sweeping walks, raking leaves, removing refuse, and hedge trimming.
- Clean tools and equipment and return items to appropriate locations after assignment is completed; ensure work site is clean, remove signing, barricades, or coning after project is completed.
- Operate power and hand tools in the course of work assignments.
- Operate automotive equipment temporarily or incidental to regular duties.
- Operate heavy equipment to haul concrete to/from worksite for some assignments.
- Sick time in accordance with City policies.
- Competitive pay.
- Position schedule is Monday thru Friday 07:00 AM to 3:30 PM
What are the minimum qualifications:
- Must pass the pre-employment background check, and a physical exam depending on area of assignment.
- High school graduate or GED preferred. Some general maintenance, repair, grounds keeping, construction trade or other related manual labor experience is preferred.
