Job Summary
We are hiring a Green Stormwater Maintenance Operator to join our team!
Make an impact: This position will work within a team to help maintain almost 500 publicly owned Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) facilities and several hundred acres of natural areas that capture stormwater runoff and improve the quality and quantity of water going into Salem’s streams.
Learn and grow: This position will learn about the importance of stormwater regulations and the stormwater system, while learning how to properly maintain GSI facilities and natural areas.
What you will do: Work as part of a team maintaining and inspecting rain gardens, swales, treatment wetlands, water quality detention basins, pervious pavement, tree boxes, treatment filters, mitigated wetlands, and other stormwater features. This will include routine and non-routine maintenance, inspection, installation, planting, and repair duties of stormwater quality facilities and natural areas while using a variety of manual landscape tools and larger equipment on occasion. You will work closely with the Green Stormwater Infrastructure section’s career maintenance operators, Natural Infrastructure Specialist, contracted landscapers, and/or Marion County Adults in Custody (AIC) work crews in weeding, mowing/weed eating, inspecting, watering and rehabbing and repairing these GSI facilities. The work of this position will be directed by the Green Stormwater Infrastructure Supervisor.

Additional Information On Job Responsibilities
- Individually or as a member of a crew, performs work in the maintenance, repair, and invasive species management for almost 500 public stormwater quality facilities and 200 acres of natural areas within the city. This work involves using hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, hedge or brush trimmers, or axes, and operating a variety of equipment such as mowers, edgers, saws, and power hand tools. Towing of various types of trailers is also necessary.
- Routine maintenance includes weeding, regularly removing debris and trash, removing accumulated sediment, planting, and performing minor irrigation system maintenance.
- Performs other landscaping maintenance functions as assigned to ensure the stormwater facility operates as designed, such as replacing/replenishing engineered soil, leveling treatment areas, mitigating erosion and channelization issues, repairing minor concrete issues, clearing blockages, and loosening compacted soil.
- Provides general plant care to vegetation in stormwater quality facilities including, planting, clearing, manually watering, removing leaves, removing dead or dying vegetating, pruning, and transplanting.
- Identify commonly planted species. Identifies invasive and noxious weeds; removes invasive and noxious weeds and applies integrated pest management practices to prevent spread of weeds through planning and proper disposal.
- Assists in the repairing, rehabilitating, and rebuilding of stormwater quality facilities.
- Keeps detailed records of work in the City's asset management system. Uses field data collection hardware and software, including iPads, cell phones and Windows PC Office software.
- Provides polite customer service to those with questions about maintenance work, stormwater facilities or general questions.
- Assists other staff in the performance of their duties as assigned.
- Maintains regular job attendance and adherence to working hours.
- Operates a motor vehicle safely and legally.

- The work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday 7:00am-3:30 pm. Working during all weather conditions, including extreme weather events is required for this position.
What are the minimum qualifications?
- Must pass the pre-employment background check and physical exam.
- Must have an Oregon Driver license and a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards.
- Two years experience in parks maintenance, repair, construction, or landscaping, horticulture, turf, or sports field maintenance or experience tree trimming, or acting as a ground hand.
