PT Library Assistant – Circulation
Class Concept
Performs administrative support work assisting library patrons, providing detailed circulation services, providing technology support, promoting services and programs, and assisting with library programming. Shelves and maintains proper order of library materials according to detailed library standards. Work is performed under the supervision of the Circulation Manager.
Essential Functions
· Performs detailed customer service, library database, and integrated library system tasks.
· Maintains knowledge of and promotes library collections, programs, technologies, and services.
· Answers reader's advisory and reference questions; communicates with and guides library patrons to locate and retrieve library materials (both in-library and online).
· Assists in the collection and recording of library statistics.
· Shelves library materials according to detailed library standards.
· Maintains a neat, organized, and inviting public area.
· Routinely inspects materials for damage and makes recommendations for repair or withdrawal.
· Assists with stacks management, including weeding, reorganization, shifting, and other projects.
· Assists as needed with library programs or program preparations/cleanup.
· Participates in relevant professional development workshops/meetings.
· Assists with opening and/or closing procedures (when applicable)
· Related tasks as required.

Education & Experience
High school diploma or GED with coursework in library sciences, or related field and minimal experience in a library and/or customer service, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Outstanding human relations skills; general knowledge of basic library procedures, methods, and techniques; ability to operate standard office and computer equipment and perform basic word processing and data entry; ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons, associates, and the general public; strong attention to detail; the ability to sort and shelve alphabetically and numerically; ability to work independently and follow instructions; ability to work a regular schedule; and ability to communicate effectively and courteously with the public and other City employees. Must be comfortable working with all ages; be able to interact with every patrons in a positive manner; and assist with reader's advisory without bias or judgement.
Physical Requirements
