You’ll work with advanced equipment including rotating drum thickeners, centrifuges, gas engines, and co-generation systems, while gaining hands-on experience with cutting-edge maintenance management programs. The City also provides training and certification ensuring your continued professional development.

What you will do:
  • Adjust and lubricate equipment and check for proper functioning on a scheduled basis, following recommendations from the Computerized Maintenance Management System and various Operation and Maintenance Manuals.
  • Remove, overhaul, reinstall, or perform routine maintenance on pumps, motors, engines, gearboxes, boilers, compressors, generators, cogeneration systems, and other equipment found in a wastewater treatment plant, or similar industrial facility.
  • Maintain accurate records and enter data into logs or software programs for record-keeping, inventory control, asset management, or documenting routine maintenance.
  • Replace or repair piping and perform plumbing and pipe fitting tasks as required. This may include fabrication, welding, and pipe fitting of new and replacement systems for pumps, piping, valves, or other special items found in a waste water treatment plant, or similar industrial facility.
  • Perform general maintenance and repair tasks on buildings, structures, and grounds.

This role requires a proactive approach to diagnosing and addressing equipment malfunctions and defects in mechanical systems. You’ll work independently to accomplish assignments, interpret blueprints and diagrams, and ensure safety standards are met. Your expertise will be critical in maintaining the reliability of our wastewater treatment operations.

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug test.
  • Must have a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards.
  • Graduation from High School or GED supplemented by courses in the mechanical trade; and two years of experience as a maintenance technician in a wastewater treatment plant, or similar industrial facility; or any equivalent combination of experience or training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities require by this position.
  • Crane and Hoist Operator License required within six months of hire.
  • Forklift Operation License required within six months of hire.
  • Backflow Prevention Repair License desirable.

  • Experience working on industrial equipment and repairs.
  • Knowledge of how machines, pumps, and hydraulics work.
  • The ability to find and fix problems with mechanical systems.
  • Skills to work independently and complete tasks on your own.
  • The ability to read and understand blueprints, sketches, and diagrams.
  • A commitment to safety and following safety rules.
  • A valid Oregon Class C driver’s license (Oregon Class A Commercial Driver's License desirable but not required).
