COMMERCIAL DRIVER – CLASS B/Laborer

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This class includes a group of positions involving the regular operation of motorized equipment utilized in various municipal highway maintenance and public works activities. Duties include the frequent operation of motorized equipment with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) in excess of 26,000 pounds. Incumbents also perform a variety of manual tasks associated with highway and public works operations. Duties are performed under general supervision. Direct supervision may be exercised over personnel engaged in assigned projects. A Commercial Driver does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

 Performs pre-trip or pre-job inspections of various motorized equipment to assure safe and efficient operation;

 Operates truck, grader, crane, bulldozer, front end loader, tractor mounted backhoe, and other motorized equipment utilized in the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges and other public work activities;

 Loads and unloads truck by hand or utilizing motorized equipment;

 Performs a variety of manual tasks associated with the repair and maintenance of roads and bridges; Physical Labor involved

 Operates a snowplow clearing and sanding roads;

 Maintains inspection and service records;

 Performs routine maintenance on assigned vehicle;

 May operate motor vehicle to observe winter weather conditions and call out fellow workers if necessary.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of general safe driving practices necessary in the operation of motorized equipment; working knowledge of the principles and operation of vehicle air brake systems; skill in the operation of trucks and other motorized equipment; ability to follow directions; good powers of observation; ability to use hand and power tools; mechanical aptitude; manual dexterity; willingness to work out of doors year round; possession of a good driving record; ability to maintain alertness and composure during snow removal activities; physical condition sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with endorsements and without restrictions as appropriate for the type of vehicle operated.
