THE POSITION

The Senior Stationary Engineer position plays a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of a wide range of plant equipment and systems. This position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of critical infrastructure, including boilers, furnaces, refuse incinerators, pumps, fans, engines, turbines, generators, and HVAC systems such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration. This position also operates and oversees the operation of control consoles within control rooms, performs related technical duties as required, and leads efforts to install, repair, maintain, and upgrade various systems and equipment.

To perform and direct others in performing maintenance, repair, and alteration work on heating, air-conditioning, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, both low and high pressure boilers, and related equipment within a large building complex.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The job of Senior Stationary Engineer differs from that of Stationary Engineer in that the Senior Stationary Engineer exercises supervision in a lead capacity over the work of Stationary Engineers, and is expected to be able to perform the most difficult and complex repair work.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Direction is provided by higher level supervisor. Assignments include the lead supervision of Stationary Engineers.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Depending upon assignments, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Plan, assign, supervise, and assist in the operation, maintenance, repair and alteration of heating, ventilating, refrigeration, air conditioning, electrical, plumbing, electronic control, and pneumatic systems, and both low and high pressure boilers; as well as minor building maintenance and repairs, such as: defective seating, doors, door hardware, locks, restroom facilities and equipment, floors, walls, tile, chair carts, risers, etc.
  • Perform detailed research and analysis of complex problems concerning mechanical, electrical, electronic, pneumatic, plumbing, and similar systems, and recommend solutions.
  • Upon request, review plans for modifications to equipment or facility.
  • Perform the most complex maintenance and repair functions.
  • Propose or review energy saving recommendations.
  • Coordinate work for the Stationary Engineers with contractors and building trades.
  • Obtain bids for work performed by contractors.
  • Write specifications for work performed by contractors.
  • Inspect work performed by contractors.
  • Plan, assign, supervise, and assist in the implementation of established preventive maintenance programs.
  • Review compliance with maintenance and service contracts.
  • Regularly inspect and test equipment to insure efficient operation.
  • Use welding equipment to repair or fabricate equipment.
  • Keep supervisors informed as to projects and problems that impact the facility or its operation.
  • Requisition parts needed for repairs.
  • Assist in the development of effective work schedules involving varied work shifts.
  • Conduct informal training for Stationary Engineers, including safe operating procedures, and insure timely completion of safety inspections.
  • Assure completion and maintenance of all necessary records.
  • Evaluate subordinate employee performance.
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, and contract or bid specifications.

Qualifications

Knowledge:

  • Principles involved in heating, ventilating, air conditioning, electrical, electronic, and pneumatic controls, plumbing and refrigeration systems, and the proper repair techniques for these systems.
  • General building maintenance and repair, including painting, plumbing, electrical, and minor carpentry.
  • Preventive maintenance, chemicals, and other materials used in boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and similar equipment.
  • Current local building, electrical, and safety codes.
  • Energy conservation products and techniques.
  • Math through addition, subtraction, multiplication, division percentage, and measurement.

Ability To:

  • Adjust and calibrate pneumatic, electronic, and electrical controls.
  • Perform detailed research and analysis of complex problems relating to maintenance and repair of all systems.
  • Use welding equipment, small power tools such as saws, drills, grinders, etc., and hand tools such as wrenches, pliers, hammers, ratchet socket sets, etc., in a proper and safe manner.
  • Communicate effectively in English, orally and in writing.
  • Supervise others effectively, plan work schedules, and assure compliance with safety requirements.
  • Read, interpret, and work from blueprints.
  • Analyze situations accurately and take effective action.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with employees and the general public.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and Education:

Experience

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Four years of experience as a stationary engineer with responsibility for the operation, maintenance and repair of heating, air conditioning, electrical, ventilating, high and low pressure boilers, and similar systems, preferably including at least one year in a supervisory or lead capacity over stationary engineers.

Education:

Ability to read and write English at a level necessary for efficient job performance.

PROOF OF EDUCATION

An applicant with a college degree obtained outside the United States must have education records evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. Evaluation of education records will be due at time of appointment.

Special Qualifications:

  • A valid California Class 3 Driver License is required for appointment to this classification, and must be maintained in order to continue employment in the classification. Individuals who do meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be considered for accommodation on a case-by-case basis.
  • Must be willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Must be able to life and carry heavy parts and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Must be normal hearing.
  • Eyesight must be corrected to 20/20 and free from visual deficiencies which would impair work performance.
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders and to crawl into and work in small, closed-in spaces.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:

Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.

    • Screening Committee: (Pass/Fail)– All candidates that pass the examination and are in one of the top three ranks will have their application forwarded to the hiring department for review.     • Conditional Hire: Upon receipt of a conditional offer, the selected candidate must complete and pass Live Scan/fingerprinting.
