What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Technician I, II, or III - Water position at City of Sachse?
Under the general supervision, the Maintenance Technician– Water performs semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and operational work on the City’s water distribution and wastewater collection systems. This position is responsible for supporting the safe and reliable delivery of water services, maintaining the integrity of the utility infrastructure, and assisting with the construction, inspection, and maintenance of water lines, valves, hydrants, and pump stations.
The Maintenance Technician supports departmental operations by completing assigned utility projects, responding to service calls and emergencies, assisting higher-level technicians, and ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and operational standards.

Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Maintenance: Performs maintenance and repair of the City’s water and wastewater systems, including monitoring chlorine residuals, collecting water samples, and inspecting water and sewer lines, manholes, and cleanouts. Assists in the repair of main and service line breaks, leaks, and other system damage through excavation, pipe replacement, valve operation, and hydrant maintenance.
Equipment Operation and Work Zone Safety: Operates a variety of light and heavy equipment under the guidance of senior staff to complete installation, maintenance, and repair tasks. Establishes and removes barricades and traffic control devices to secure work zones and ensure public and worker safety.
Pump and Lift Station Maintenance: Assists in maintaining pump and lift stations by inspecting pumps, control valves, and wet wells; performing minor mechanical and electrical maintenance; removing debris; and monitoring operational performance to support continuous service delivery.
Diagnostic, Inspection, and Support Activities: Performs leak detection, video inspections, and other diagnostic activities to identify issues within the water distribution and wastewater systems. Supports other Public Works divisions, including Parks, Streets, and Wastewater, with maintenance, repairs, and special projects to ensure reliable City operations.
Emergency Response and Work Order Completion: Responds to work orders, service calls, and emergency situations to restore water service and system integrity. Coordinates with supervisors and team members to complete assigned tasks efficiently and accurately.
Interdepartmental and Emergency Support: Assists other Public Works divisions, including Parks, Streets, Wastewater, and Meter Services with maintenance, repairs, and special projects. Responds to work orders, service calls, and emergency situations to restore service and maintain system integrity.
Other Duties: Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Utility System Knowledge: Knowledge of materials, tools, equipment, and advanced techniques used in water distribution, wastewater collection, and pump station operations. Understanding of safe work practices, excavation procedures, and basic diagnostic methods.
Equipment and Operational Skills: Skill in operating a range of hand tools, power tools, and light equipment used in utility construction, maintenance, and repair. Ability to follow established procedures, complete assigned tasks, and assist with complex maintenance operations.
Safety and Compliance: Knowledge of traffic control techniques, confined space protocols, and safe work methods. Ability to implement and follow safety standards to protect personnel and the public.
Teamwork and Communication: Ability to work collaboratively with other technicians and divisions, follow written and oral instructions, and maintain accurate records. Effective oral and written communication skills for coordinating work, reporting issues, and documenting activities.
Maintenance Tech I
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma/GED.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION OR OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possess a valid State of Texas Class C Driver License at time of hire.
NOTE: Must possess and maintain a State of Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within one year of date of hire.
Must have the ability to remain on call as required for after-hours repairs, emergencies, and related operational needs.
Maintenance Tech II
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma/GED.
One or more years of experience in water distribution and wastewater collection maintenance, repair, and operational work.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION OR OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possess a valid State of Texas Commercial Driver (CDL), Class B at time of hire or career progression.
Must hold or obtain a Class I Wastewater Collection License as issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) within six months of date of hire.
Must have the ability to remain on call as required for after-hours repairs, emergencies, and related operational needs.
Maintenance Tech III
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Two or more years of experience in water distribution and wastewater collection maintenance, repair, and operational work.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION OR OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possess a valid State of Texas Commercial Driver (CDL), Class B at time of hire or career progression.Possess and maintain two or more of the following License at the time of hire or career progression:
Class I or higher Wastewater Collection license as issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
Backflow Prevention and Testing (BPAT) license as issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
Class D, or higher, Water License as issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)
Must have the ability to remain on call as required for after-hours repairs, emergencies, and related operational needs.
