What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Technician I, II, or III - Streets position at City of Sachse?
The Maintenance Technician supports departmental operations through fieldwork activities including pavement repair, concrete work, traffic control setup, debris removal, and emergency response. Working as part of a crew, this role contributes to the preservation of public assets, promotes safe work practices, and supports timely service delivery to residents and internal stakeholders.

Street Maintenance and Infrastructure Repair: Performs routine maintenance and repair activities on streets, alleys, sidewalks, curbs, medians, and related infrastructure. Patches potholes, seals cracks, repairs asphalt and concrete surfaces, and assists with pavement restoration to maintain safe driving and pedestrian conditions. Prepares work areas by cleaning, cutting, removing damaged pavement, filling cracks or holes with appropriate materials, compacting surfaces, and ensuring proper finishing.
Equipment Operation and Work Zone Safety: Operates a variety of tools and equipment, including rollers, loaders, saws, crack seal machines, and other light to medium-duty construction equipment. Establishes and removes barricades, traffic cones, and warning devices to ensure safe and compliant work zones in accordance with traffic control standards and safety protocols.
Concrete and Right-of-Way Maintenance: Assists with concrete work, including setting forms, pouring and finishing concrete, and verifying proper alignment and grading. Collects and removes litter, debris, and obstructions from streets, medians, rights-of-way, and underpasses to maintain clean, safe, and accessible public spaces.
Emergency Response and Interdepartmental Support: Responds to assigned work orders and emergency call-outs as required, including storm response and hazard mitigation. Assists other Public Works divisions, including Parks, Water, and Sewer, with maintenance and repair activities or special projects as needed to support overall departmental operations.
Other Duties: Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Construction and Maintenance Knowledge: Knowledge of materials, tools, equipment, and methods used in street construction and maintenance. Understanding of pavement repair techniques, concrete finishing methods, and right-of-way upkeep. Knowledge of traffic control techniques and applicable safety standards.
Safety and Operational Practices: Knowledge of safe work methods and procedures related to construction and maintenance activities. Ability to follow established safety protocols and operate equipment responsibly.
Technical and Equipment Skills: Skill in utilizing a variety of hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment related to street and right-of-way maintenance. Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in outdoor environments.
Communication and Teamwork: Ability to follow written and oral instructions accurately. Skill in effective oral communication and the ability to work cooperatively as part of a crew to complete assignments efficiently and safely.
Maintenance Tech I
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma/GED.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION OR OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possess a valid State of Texas Class C Driver License at time of hire.
NOTE: Must possess and maintain a State of Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within one year of date of hire.
Must have the ability to remain on call as required for after-hours repairs, emergencies, and related operational needs.
Maintenance Tech II
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma/GED.
One or more years of experience in street maintenance, repair, and operational work.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION OR OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possess a valid State of Texas Commercial Driver (CDL), Class B at time of hire or career progression.
Must have the ability to remain on call as required for after-hours repairs, emergencies, and related operational needs.
Maintenance Tech III
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Two or more years of experience in street maintenance, repair, and operational work.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION OR OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possess a valid State of Texas Commercial Driver (CDL), Class B at time of hire or career progression. AND
Must hold a Class D Water Operator License as issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) OR
Must hold a Class I or higher Wastewater Collection license as issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) OR
Must have successfully qualified on performance testing for operation of heavy equipment at the time of hire or career progression.
Must have the ability to remain on call as required for after-hours repairs, emergencies, and related operational needs.
