The City of Roxboro (8,200) currently has openings for a Police Corporal. Roxboro is situated in Person County, which is located near the Virginia border and just a short drive from Raleigh, Durham, and Greensboro.

Employees in this class supervise other officers on a shift and will participate in some personnel related functions to include staff performance reviews. Will also serve as the acting Sergeant in their absence, in addition to performing specialized law enforcement work. The employee directs shift operations, conducts field training of new officers, monitors and evaluates work, reviews reports and directs patrol and investigative operations, and provides back-up to officers during shift operations. Supervisory assignments include initial review reports of officers, providing leadership on the shift or with investigators, providing officer training, and handling complaints from citizens occurring on the assigned shift, in the absence of the Sergeant. Other responsibilities include making decisions on the daily work activities of the shift or assigned area; making assignments; and providing technical direction on matters related to division activities. Work is performed under the supervision of the sergeant with specific guidelines but minimum supervision and requires the application of modern law enforcement techniques, sound judgment, and independent initiative in pursuit of work objectives. Work involves frequent public contact which requires tact, firmness, and decisiveness. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policy and State and Federal laws, supplemented with specific directions from superior officers. The employees are subject to hazards associated with law enforcement including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as atmospheric conditions, noise, vibration, and physical conditions. Employees may be exposed to human body fluids and are subject to the OSHA bloodborne pathogen rules and regulations and may be required to work in close quarters. This position is considered a safety sensitive role. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Police Sergeant and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and review of reports and feedback from citizens.

Salary:

· $51,462 – Starting Pay

Job Duties:

  • Supervises activities on a shift in the absence of the Sergeant; determines assignments and determines the appropriate response to the variety of calls which may be forwarded; provides technical advice on how to respond in certain situations; reviews reports and records; provides guidance and performance evaluations.
  • Provides liaison between detectives and narcotics and assigned shift staff; supervises activities associated with the initial criminal, drug, and juvenile investigations which occur on a shift or geographic area.
  • Participates in patrol functions to include responding to calls, providing back-up to more suspicious calls, serving papers, and arresting offenders; identifies, collects, and preserves physical evidence; and prepares written reports of patrol activities; works school crossings; escorts business staff to bank.
  • Interviews persons in connection with all investigated incidents; develops contacts and information sources concerning criminal activities.
  • Monitors quality of work and reports issues and problems to supervisor; provides officer training.
  • Cooperates with local citizens, members of other local, state, and federal law enforcement and investigative agencies in the identification, location, apprehension, and arrest of offenders and in the investigation of criminal activities.
  • Prepares related paperwork related to case management; prepares documents for district attorney and presentations to court.
  • Participate in training courses, to include practical skills tests and other tests of physical abilities.
  • Speaks to students at local schools and at civic and church group meetings.
  • Participates in departmental training activities.
  • Serves as the subject matter expert on forensic evidence gathering.

· Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

· Considerable knowledge of modern law enforcement techniques, principles, and procedures related to patrol or investigative activities.

· Considerable knowledge of Federal, State and local laws and ordinances pertaining to law enforcement operations and investigative procedures.

· Considerable knowledge in the area of forensic crime scene investigations to include proper gathering and handling of forensic evidence.

· Considerable knowledge of the physical, economic, and social characteristics of the City.

· Working knowledge of supervisory functions and skills.

· Skill in the use of firearms and other law enforcement equipment and in the application of self-defense tactics.

· Ability to work calmly under conditions of high stress and physical and emotional fatigue.

· Ability to prepare clear and concise records and reports.

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisor, citizens and community leaders, and the general public.

· Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.

Physical Requirements:

· Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

· Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

· Must possess the visual acuity to perform extensive reading, handle administrative, computer, and measurement work, operate law enforcement vehicles and equipment, and observe the accuracy and thoroughness of other employees.

Desirable Education and Special Requirements:

· Completion of high school supplemented with coursework in law enforcement

· Experience in law enforcement with some demonstrated leadership ability

· Associates degree in law enforcement preferred;

· Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license

· Completion of the minimum requirements established by the North Carolina Justice Training and Standards Council for certified law enforcement officers.

· Good moral character

· Good physical condition
