Description
Under general supervision, the Evidence Technician maintains all property and evidence seized or kept by the police department. This is accomplished by receiving and storing all evidence collected by the police department; ensuring a continuous chain of custody; responding to and fulfilling requests on evidence. The Evidence Technician is responsible for researching and using appropriate means to complete final dispositions.
Posted range is the starting salary. Pay rate offered is based on experience.
Examples of Duties
- Manages the ordering, storing, and furnishing of evidence supplies for all divisions within the Police Department by assessing main evidence, packaging rooms, and holding cells for replenishment of supplies; creates a list of and distributes supplies; manages main evidence storage.
- Manages intake and storage of all property and evidence collected by the Police Department; stores property in appropriate locations; contacts officers for more information on issues that need to be corrected. Researches cases for court disposition; completes appropriate means of final disposition for all property and evidence.
- Responds to and fulfills requests for evidence from other agencies as well as within the department by researching cases and maintaining a log of all requests; makes copies of available evidence; manages and prepares evidence to be released; transports evidence to county and district attorney's offices weekly.
- Maintains organized records related to property and evidence by sorting and collecting paperwork from property; sort's paperwork in order of case; scans paperwork and electronically attaches to case file.
- Handles support and training pertaining to evidence and property for all divisions within the Police Department by providing support to officers managing cases as needed; trains and advises officers on correct packaging of evidence.
- Maintains knowledge of the law and policies regarding the management of evidence and property by attending training; reviews all department policies and procedures; maintains evidence packaging manual.
Manages the delivery of evidence to and from court, laboratories, prosecutor's offices, and other locations by tracking information and safely securing the transportation of evidence; accepts and releases to agencies and police department; updates chain of custody forms.
Experience and Training
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. Plus six (6) months of advanced study or training obtained from an accredited college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school.
- Minimum one (1) year required in records or inventory management.
Certificates and Licenses Required
- Valid Texas Driver's License.
- Certification from the International Association of Property and Evidence Technicians preferred or completion within the first six (6) months of employment.
