The City of Rosemount is hiring a Building Inspector or Senior Building Inspector to help us grow and enhance the services, infrastructure, and experiences that make our community strong. We have one (1) vacancy for either a Building Inspector or Senior Building Inspector. Assignment will be determined by the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The Building Inspector/Senior Building Inspector performs building inspections and plan reviews to ensure compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and ordinances relating to building, fire, property maintenance, rental, and zoning. Prepares permits and completes and maintains required reports and records.

NOTE:  The Senior Building Inspector differs from the Building Inspector because they also assist the Chief Building Official in the training and coaching of building inspection personnel regarding the interpretation and application of applicable codes and inspection procedures; provides technical assistance and general work direction to building inspection personnel; and assumes assigned duties and responsibilities of the Chief Building Official during the Chief Building Official’s absence, as designated.To see a full list of the essential duties for the Building Inspector, please see our Job Description

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry Building Official Limited certification
  • Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry Certified Building Official certification must be obtained within three years of hire.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
Desirable Qualifications for Building Inspector
  • Post-secondary education or coursework in law enforcement, public administration, housing, construction, planning, or a related field.
  • Mechanical and/or plumbing experience.
  • Experience in commercial and industrial construction.
  • Experience with commercial and residential plan review.
  • Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry Certified Building Official.
  • International Code Council (ICC) certifications related to building inspection, plan review, or other applicable code disciplines.
  • Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Subsurface Sewage Treatment Systems (SSTS) certification.

Minimum Qualifications for Senior Building Inspector ($46.362 - $58.010)
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Three years of progressively responsible building inspection experience involving residential and commercial construction.
  • Three years of progressively responsible experience performing commercial and residential plan reviews.
  • Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry Certified Building Official certification.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
Desirable Qualifications for Senior Building Inspector
  • Post-secondary education or coursework in law enforcement, public administration, housing, construction, planning, or a related field.
  • Five years of progressively responsible building inspection experience involving residential and commercial construction.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience performing commercial and residential plan reviews.
  • Prior plumbing or HVAC trade experience involving installation of plumbing, mechanical, or HVAC systems.
  • Prior commercial or industrial construction experience.
  • International Code Council (ICC) certifications related to building inspection, plan review, or other applicable code disciplines.
  • Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Subsurface Sewage Treatment Systems (SSTS) certification.


Physical Requirements and Activity 
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions.
Sensory Requirements
Work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
Sensory Utilization
Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.
Environmental Conditions
Work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant).
