Maintenance Worker (TEMPORARY)

Under general supervision of Maintenance Superintendent, this position performs a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled and specialized park, parkway, trail, street and drainage maintenance tasks (which may include facilities and landscaped areas), and perform specialized projects as required. 

Temporary assignment that may lead to consideration for regular full-time placement based on departmental needs.
  • General street, park, trail, and building maintenance;
  • Waters, mows, weeds, trims, renovates and fertilizes lawn areas; rakes and picks up leaves and debris; operates power mower, edger and other grounds equipment;
  • Inspects and cleans storm drains;
  • Clear fallen trees, dead animal and debris from public paths, walkways and streetways;
  • Sprays herbicides and insecticides when necessary;
  • Drives a City vehicle to various sites;
  • Inspects, operates, and performs routine maintenance on a variety of tools and equipment (refuel, change oil, lubricating parts, etc.);
  • Trims trees from ground and from aerial tower with chainsaw;
  • Performs minor plumbing, repairs, change lights, wash windows, repair cement, repair doors, paints;
  • Sets up/tear down for City events and City-permitted events as assigned;
  • Constructs, repairs and paints horse trail fences if necessary; 
  • Maintains trails and horse arenas
  • Installs and makes repairs on sprinkling systems;
  • Responds to on-call emergency situations as required;
  • Perform graffiti removal;
  • Order and pick up parts as needed;
  • Attend required and recommended workshops and seminars as scheduled;
  • Perform related duties and special projects as assigned/required. 
Education and Experience:
Any equivalent combination of training, education and experience, which provides the individual with the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job. To include:
  • Equivalent to completion of high school;
  • One year experience in general grounds maintenance.

Job-related Certifications/Licenses:
  • Must possess a valid California Driver’s License with a safe driving record.

Knowledge of:
  • Methods, tools, materials and equipment used in grounds maintenance work, including weed abatement, fence construction, and traffic safety;
  • Operation and maintenance of construction equipment and tools;
  • Minor irrigation and plumbing repairs;
  • Tractor driving (i.e., used in maintenance of City riding rings, etc.);
  • Park maintenance and building maintenance;
  • Minor cement repair and painting;
  • Tree trimming techniques;
  • Safety precautions and policies;
  • CPR/First Aid.

Ability to:
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Safely use a variety of hand and power tools used in carpentry and landscape maintenance;
  • Operate heavy machinery, equipment and tools;
  • Weld, as needed;
  • Perform general grounds maintenance work with minimal supervision;
  • Perform heavy manual labor;
  • Complete work assignments on a timely basis;
  • Present a courteous and professional image to the public;
  • Communicate clearly; understand and follow oral and written instructions; 
  • Serve as emergency services worker in the event of an emergency.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring complex and rapid  adjustments, such as the use of hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools, and the operation of vehicles in a safe and effective manner.  Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing semi-skilled movements, such as assembling. Ability to exert heavy physical effort in moderate to heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and  pulling. Ability to lift, push and pull 50 to 75 pounds consistent with mechanic. Routinely exposed to conditions where environmental factors such as temperature variations, odors, toxic agents, violence, noise, vibrations, wetness, machinery, disease and/or dust.  Responds to emergency call-out requests on a 24-hour basis.
