What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Worker (TEMPORARY) position at City of Rolling Hills Estates?
Under general supervision of Maintenance Superintendent, this position performs a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled and specialized park, parkway, trail, street and drainage maintenance tasks (which may include facilities and landscaped areas), and perform specialized projects as required.
Temporary assignment that may lead to consideration for regular full-time placement based on departmental needs.

Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring complex and rapid adjustments, such as the use of hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools, and the operation of vehicles in a safe and effective manner. Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing semi-skilled movements, such as assembling. Ability to exert heavy physical effort in moderate to heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling. Ability to lift, push and pull 50 to 75 pounds consistent with mechanic. Routinely exposed to conditions where environmental factors such as temperature variations, odors, toxic agents, violence, noise, vibrations, wetness, machinery, disease and/or dust. Responds to emergency call-out requests on a 24-hour basis.

- Equivalent to completion of high school;
- One year experience in general grounds maintenance.
Job-related Certifications/Licenses:
- Must possess a valid California Driver’s License with a safe driving record.
Knowledge of:
- Methods, tools, materials and equipment used in grounds maintenance work, including weed abatement, fence construction, and traffic safety;
- Operation and maintenance of construction equipment and tools;
- Minor irrigation and plumbing repairs;
- Tractor driving (i.e., used in maintenance of City riding rings, etc.);
- Park maintenance and building maintenance;
- Minor cement repair and painting;
- Tree trimming techniques;
- Safety precautions and policies;
- CPR/First Aid.
Ability to:
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
- Safely use a variety of hand and power tools used in carpentry and landscape maintenance;
- Operate heavy machinery, equipment and tools;
- Weld, as needed;
- Perform general grounds maintenance work with minimal supervision;
- Perform heavy manual labor;
- Complete work assignments on a timely basis;
- Present a courteous and professional image to the public;
- Communicate clearly; understand and follow oral and written instructions;
- Serve as emergency services worker in the event of an emergency.
