What are the responsibilities and job description for the On Call & Saturday Library Circulation Assistant position at City of Rockland, ME?
Join Our Crew: On-Call & Saturday Library Circulation Assistant
City of Rockland Public Library
Got a great sense of humor, a soft spot for organized chaos, and genuine love for helping people? We want you!
We're looking for someone who thrives on variety — one week you're helping a toddler find their first chapter book, the next you're troubleshooting a printer jam or tracking down an interlibrary loan from three towns over. If you're quick on your feet, unflappable under a rush of patrons, and secretly (or not-so-secretly) a detailed nerd, this is your spot.
The gig: On-call/sub shifts, plus at least one Saturday a month. Perfect if you want flexible, meaningful work without a rigid 9-to-5.
You'll be the face (and voice) of the library — checking materials in and out, registering new patrons, answering phones, shelving with precision, and keeping our Interlibrary Loan system running smoothly. Some days it's quiet and methodical; some days it's a full-on public service sprint. You'll roll with both.
What makes you a great fit:
- People-person energy with real customer service chops
- Sharp attention to detail (shelf-reading is basically a treasure hunt)
- Comfortable with tech — bonus points if you've used Sierra or another ILS
- A multi-tasker who stays calm when three things happen at once
- Reliable, flexible, and able to keep patron info confidential (Maine Statutes require it — we take it seriously)
- Can lift up to 25 lbs. and stay on your feet for a shift
What you'll actually do:
- Help patrons in person, by phone, and online
- Manage check-ins/check-outs and library card registrations
- Handle fees for printing, copies, etc.
- Shelve and shelf-read accurately
- Open/close the building
- Process overdue notices and lost item billing
- Help process our Interlibrary Loan operation (yes, that includes packing boxes)
- Join occasional team meetings/workshops to keep sharpening your skills
The essentials:
- High school diploma or equivalent (some post-secondary training/experience a plus)
- At least 1 year of relevant work experience; library or customer service experience strongly preferred
- Strong written/verbal comprehension and independent judgment
- Ability to build good working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public
If you like the idea of being the friendly, capable person patrons count on — and you want a job that keeps you on your toes without keeping you chained to a desk — we'd love to hear from you.
Pay: $18.00 per hour
Benefits:
- Flexible schedule
