Water/ Wastewater Field Technician

Brief Description of Job: Based on a regular 40-hour work week, plus on-call rotation, and assisting with emergency after-hours work. Involves maintaining and repairing the city's water distribution system, wastewater collection system and water treatment facilities. This includes pipelines, valves, meters, lift stations, treatment plants, and other related infrastructure. Tasks include inspecting and reading water meters, locating and fixing leaks, and ensuring water quality meets city standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Works under the direction of the Water Department Supervisor. Perform necessary work on site as needed in all phases of public utility operations. Maintain proper housekeeping and organization at all plants and work sites.

Take readings from various meters and gauges, record information. Check and maintain proper levels in both ground storage and elevated water towers. Check and monitor water wells for proper operation including breakers, motors, pumps, lubricating fluids.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Frequent to occasional; standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, foot controls. Continuous vision. Frequent hearing and talking.

Vision: To drive, read, use computer, complete testing, repair leaks, work with tools, check inventories, load and unload trucks. To read gauges, meters, warning lights, to turn pumps on and off, perform water tests. Color discrimination to take samples and run lab tests; to determine fluid levels of chemicals.

Lifting/Carrying: Pipe to 200 lbs., lifted and carried by 2 or 3 people. Lay pipe in trenches; power saw (28 lbs), shovel (16 lbs), 8: gate valve (210 lbs), 8” tee (102 lbs), cutting machine, tamper, jack hammer, tools and other equipment (up to 150 lbs); fire hydrant, pumps/motors, sacrete (90 lbs), cans of water, samples taken etc. up to 70 lbs, air pack (40 lbs)

Pushing/Pulling: Levers, valves, breaker switches, pipe in trenches, load and unload truck, release or close tail gate, hand brake, push and pull dirt from trenches or to back fill over pipe, push machinery for sewer clean out, pull hose, adjust blower wheels, push/pull wenches, move cylinders (over 50lbs exertion), load/unload truck.

Bending/Twisting, Kneeling/Crouching: To work on pipes/lines, taking samples, cleaning/maintaining equipment, read/check meters and gauges.

Climbing/Balancing: Into/out of trenches, into equipment, to check equipment, to take samples; to climb ladders with either round or flat rungs; Ability to climb approximately 125 feet on a tower ladder

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Work indoors and outdoors in all types of weather, exposed to wind, high humidity, heat to in excess of 100 degrees in summer, exposure to chemicals used for additives, possible injury due to slips from ladders, moving parts, noisy environment due to engines and pumps, vibration from operation of pumps, backhoes, etc.; exposure to raw sewage-pathogenic bacteria, viruses, physical danger from flying debris, danger from work in traffic, danger from slick floors, exposure/danger from snakes, spiders, insects.

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Hard hat, eye protection, ear protection, gloves, and protective boots as identified in Operational Procedures.

EXPERIENCE:

Prefer a minimum of three years’ experience in operations in municipal community service or public works.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma or GED, Valid Texas Driver’s License, Vehicle driver insurability.

SKILLS:

Qualifications: To understand and uphold the importance of the role of a Public Employee; compatible with the public and fellow employees. Self-motivated, with ability to work with minimum supervision. Knowledge and ability to adhere to safety procedures for handling and storing treatment chemicals; Ability to determine needed tools and fittings for various leaks or repairs to water and wastewater lines.

Reading: City regulations, department policies/procedures, equipment and plant operation manuals, personnel forms and time sheets.

Writing: Reports as required, notes, letters, logs, time sheets, test/lab results.

Interpersonal: Develop and maintain effective working relationships with department employees, other City staff and department heads, communicate effectively, politely and in a professional manner with the public, handle emergencies in an effective and professional manner.
