GENERAL:

JOB SUMMARY:
Under direction, to perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties in the maintenance, repair, and construction of City parks and athletic fields; to use and operate manual tools and light and heavy power driven equipment; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility. This position will work independently and exercise judgment and initiative.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May exercise technical and functional supervision over lower level staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs a variety of duties including, but not limited to:
- Perform highly skilled and specialized parks maintenance duties and basic facility maintenance work.
- Mow, trim, edge, fertilize, aerate, and irrigate lawns, medians, parks; weed, prune, mulch, fertilize and spray trees, shrubs and turf.
- Prepare soil for planting, seed and re-sod turf areas, plant trees and shrubs, prune, remove stumps, clear limbs and brush.
- Clean and maintain grounds, athletic fields, playground areas, path, walkways and stairways, maintain restrooms and other park buildings, pick up trash and litter.
- Store, mix and spray herbicides, fungicides and pesticides.
- Read and interpret plans, specifications, blueprints and schematics.
- Inspect assigned areas, correct or report safety hazards. Maintain work sites in a clean and orderly condition. Observe safe work methods and use safety equipment. Secure worksites from pedestrian and vehicle traffic as necessary. Attend safety meetings.
- Make material and equipment estimates for assignments.
- Operate a variety of hand and power landscape tools and equipment, including push and riding mowers, tractors, spreaders, roto-tillers, sprayers, edger’s, blowers, hedge trimmers, weed eaters, chainsaws, rakes, shovels, chippers, pruners, ladders and other tools.
- Carry out assignments in a non-disruptive manner in areas receiving heavy public use.
- Perform basic records and report work of accomplished, vandalism and maintenance requests.
- Assist other divisions in maintenance activities as assigned.
- Performs snow and ice removal functions using snowplow, frontend loaders, snow blowers and shovels.
- Operate a motor vehicle to transport materials and perform job duties.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities and assigned.
ABILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS
Has the knowledge, skills and ability to:
- Use safe working practices, techniques, tools and equipment required in repair and maintenance work.
- Learn to operate a wide variety of equipment and tools used in park maintenance and repair in a safe and effective manner.
- Learn occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in maintenance and repair work.
- Write routine reports.
- Add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Compute rate, ratio and percent.
- Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Perform manual labor for extended periods of time in all types of weather.
- Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Operate a motor vehicle and ensure safe driving principles and practices.
- Understand, interpret and apply pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, safety rules, and operating and maintenance instructions.

- Understand the organization and operation of the assigned department and the City necessary to assume assigned responsibilities.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities may be:
Experience:
Two years of experience in landscape and park maintenance, and/or course work in horticulture, or landscape maintenance and construction.
Education:
Equivalent to a high school diploma.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a Wyoming Driver’s License.
Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year, a Wyoming Commercial Applicators License with Ornamental Pest Control (Weed, Insect, Disease, Rodent) and Right of Way Pest Control endorsements.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:
Employee is regularly required to use hands to grasp, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk and sit. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and smell. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to perform heavy physical labor, including having sufficient strength to lift and carry tools and materials weighing up to 90 pounds. While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions hot, wet or cold, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. The noise level in the work environment may be moderate to loud depending upon working conditions. The employee may need to be available and perform shift work, on-call, stand-by and emergency call.
