Description
Under general supervision; performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties requiring the use of journeyman level skills in the maintenance and repair of municipal systems and related public facilities; may supervise small work crews.
Examples of Duties
1. Operates dump trucks, refuse trucks, trucks with attachments; e.g. snow plows, spreader or winches; backhoe, front-end loaders, other similar vehicular equipment, and assorted trailer mounted equipment. May operate more complex equipment on training basis or under supervision.
2. Performs journeyman level plumbing and masonry work in the repair, maintenance, and replacement of municipal water distribution system, such as water main taps, installation of repair sleeves, valve vault installation or repair, hydrant repair, and main chlorination.
3. Cleans sewer culverts, drains, gutters, ditches, and other drainage facilities; operates sewer main jetter and catch basic vacuum cleaners.
4. Performs journeyman level carpentry and concrete work in the maintenance and repair of public streets and facilities, such as constructing full depth patches in concrete and/or asphalt streets forming and pouring of concrete walks, floors, and walls, and constructing wood frame walls, including framing doors and windows.
5. Acts as lead worker of small work crews; may perform semi-skilled manual tasks in the removal of debris from municipal thorough-fares.
6. Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Education
Requires the knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years high school.
Experience
Requires two (2) years experience in utility maintenance and repair as related to general construction activities.
Requires working knowledge of maintenance and repair methods, tools, and materials.
Requires ability to operate and use vehicles and equipment.
Requires ability to exercise safe work practices.
Requires ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Requires ability to operate equipment and perform work in a variety of weather conditions.
Requires willingness to respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day.
Requires possession of a Class B CDL Air Brake Drivers License.
Supplemental Information
Selected candidates must meet a residency requirement, which includes living in the state of Illinois or Iowa and must report within 60 minutes after being called into work for an overtime assignment.
