The City of Roanoke is seeking a Signal Technician II to perform skilled and technical work in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of traffic signals and other control devices. The successful candidate will install, operate, and repair traffic signals, controllers, electronic timing devices, emergency lights, signal communication and coordination system and other electrical and electronic equipment; erect poles, run messenger cable, hang overhead lights and other devices; and replace electronic components. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) supplemented by technical training in electrical and electronic engineering; two to four years related experience and/or training in the construction and maintenance of municipal traffic signals and detection systems; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must have a CDL or obtain within 6 months of employment. Must possess or obtain within 4 years of employment IMSA Traffic Signal Level II certification.
Performs skilled and technical work in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of traffic signals and other control devices. Installs, operates and repairs traffic signals, controllers, electronic timing devices, emergency lights, signal communication and coordination system and other electrical and electronic equipment. Erects poles, runs messenger cable, hangs overhead lights and other devices. Replaces electronic components.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Recommends and designs modification of traffic signal controller, relays and other apparatus
Installs, operates and repairs traffic signals, controllers, electronic timing devices,vehicle detection systems, emergency lights and other electrical and electronic equipment
Erects poles, runs messenger cable, hangs overhead lights and other devices
Installs and repairs various signal vehicle detection system
Replaces electronic components
Installs and maintains aerial and underground traffic signals and communication cables
Maintains standby status on rotation, makes emergency repairs to equipment after hours
Keeps records of work and makes reports
Assists in procuring routine materials and maintaining inventories
Recommends and/or makes modifications to signal equipment upgrade and signal coordination system improvement
Installs and maintains automated traffic signal control equipment and coordination systems
Assists and works with vendors on new signal technologies development for our current signal system improvements.
Inspects work in progress and on completion, verifies proper observance of safety precautions
Assists in preparation of sketches, plans and specifications for new construction, installation and major repairs to existing electrical systems and equipment
In absence of supervisor, directs activities of the division when authorized
Assists traffic engineering staff in keeping traffic signal timing current and appropriately adjusted to meet the current traffic demands
Assists contractors and utility companies during new construction
Assists with implementing and developing computerized timing and phase sequence for traffic signals and systems
Serves as a lead technician in maintenance and operation of intelligent transportation systems including traffic monitoring cameras, variable message signs, and operations center controls and operations.
Assists with signal installations meeting MUTCD standards
Operates heavy and light snow removal

Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must have a CDL or obtain within 6 months of employment. Must possess or obtain within 4 years of employment IMSA Traffic Signal Level II certification.
