The Position

Under close supervision, performs a variety of trainee level law enforcement functions for the City of Riverside Police Department. This is a work training program for college students who are preparing for a career in law enforcement.

Employees in this class are participating in an on-the-job training program in which incumbents will learn to perform law enforcement and para-technical duties in accordance with established procedures. Assignments may be made within any division of the Police Department. Incumbents will progress through various assignments and specific coursework enabling them to choose among various law enforcement career options. Initially, employees will work under close supervision. As knowledge is acquired of procedures applicable to assigned work, incumbents will be expected to perform routine duties with greater independence.

Work Performed

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Determines classes of crime and collects evidence.
  • Prepare detailed police reports.
  • Initiates and issues parking citations.
  • Assists officers policing special events.
  • Assists in crime scene security
  • Assists support personnel with clerical duties as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or G.E.D; must be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) semester units at an accredited college or university and maintain a minimum of a 2.0 or "C" grade point average.

Special Requirement: Minimum age of 18 years required with a maximum age of 24 years.

The selection process will begin with an employment application package screening, with the best qualified candidates being invited to participate further in the assessment process. Positions that require, or may require, a California Commercial Driver’s License are considered Safety Sensitive and are monitored by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Any candidate being considered for a Safety Sensitive position must submit authorization forms to the City immediately upon request to begin the pre-employment process.

Educational Requirements

Education obtained outside the United States (US) require one of the following options:

  • An equivalency statement from an evaluation company certified by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) at http://www.naces.org/members.html or the Association of International Credential Evaluators Inc. (AICE) at http://aice-eval.org/members/.
  • An advanced-level degree from an accredited US college or university.

Temporary Variable & Full-Time

Employees hired in a temporary position working "variable" part-time hours (less than 30 hrs/week) may be eligible to enroll in a health insurance plan offered by the City upon meeting full-time eligibility at the end of their measurement period (12 months). Employees hired in a temporary full-time (more than 30 hrs/week) position will be eligible to enroll in a health insurance plan offered by the City upon hire.

All temporary employees are automatically enrolled in a mandatory Deferred Compensation plan in lieu of Social Security. Temporary employees are also eligible for paid sick leave as outlined in the Fringe Benefits and Salary Plan, Section 7. Employees may be eligible for CalPERS membership upon hire if they are already a CalPERS member, Tier designation is based on membership date. If no prior CalPERS membership exists, employees must meet CalPERS eligibility requirements before being brought into CalPERS membership.
