Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Three years of law enforcement experience
- Must be POST certified
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree in Public Administration, Political Science, Criminology or related field
- Previous experience as an assigned or appointed investigator/detective with a law enforcement agency
Major Duties:
- Responds to crime scene and assumes leadership role in directing necessary actions
- Locates and interview witnesses and victims
- Interrogates or questions suspects
- Recognizes and identifies evidence; gather information from incident report and /or crime scene; obtains statements, document related factual evidence; collect and transport evidence to crime laboratory
- Examines court, law enforcement, public and governmental records needed for investigation
- Gathers, analyzes, and preserves evidence concerning crimes; keeps records and prepared reports related to investigative work
- Prepares case files for criminal prosecution; testify in court
- Confers with informants to get information on activities going on within the City
- Investigates crimes and related law enforcement problems; performs crime scene searches by photographing and/or diagramming scene and evidence, checking for latent fingerprints, and collecting any physical evidence present
- Maintains control over physical evidence gathered; records and stores evidence in department; processes evidence identification information; transports evidence to state crime lab for further processing
- Determines probable cause to search, obtain search warrant for appropriate court, and personally conducts searches authorized; describes reason for arrest and obtains arrest warrant for appropriate court, and either personally makes arrest or turns warrant over to uniform patrol division or other police agency for service
- Detains and arrests suspects; protects the rights of individuals in custody; processes arrested persons by obtaining identification and prior arrest record information, recording all property confiscated, and transporting suspects to jail
- Compiles and analyzes intelligence information on criminals and criminal activity; identifies criminals responsible for activity and provides possible courses of action that can be taken to curtail that activity
- Performs other related duties as assigned
