What are the responsibilities and job description for the WASTEWATER OPERATORS OIT/I/II position at City of Ridgecrest?
Public Works Wastewater Division:
The City of Ridgecrest is seeking (2) qualified individuals to fill the position of Wastewater Facilities Operator OIT, I, II, or III. This position is responsible for inspecting, operating, and maintaining wastewater treatment and collection facilities, as well as performing corrective and repair work on wastewater treatment plant systems and maintenance on the wastewater collection system. Placement within the classification is dependent on the applicant's current license and certification level.
Wastewater Facilities Operator in Training
- This is the trainee level class in this series. Incumbents in this class have no prior experience in treatment plant operations and do not possess an operator’s certificate. Operators in Training perform the most routine duties at the plant, progressing to more complex duties with training and experience. Progression to the next level requires the acquisition of a Grade I Certificate as a Wastewater Operator and demonstrating proficiency that meet the qualifications for the higher-level class.
Wastewater Facilities Operator I
- This is the entry-level position in the wastewater facilities operator series. Under immediate supervision, the Wastewater Facilities Operator I perform routine and repetitive work according to established procedures and is engaged in continuous training toward full certification. Vacant positions may be flexibly staffed and filled at the I level with the expectation of progressing to the II level as skills and responsibilities increase. Must have a Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate.
Wastewater Facilities Operator II
- This is the full journey-level class within the wastewater facilities operator series. Positions in this class are assigned to more complex tasks and require a complete knowledge of operational procedures. Wastewater Facilities Operator II positions are typically filled through advancement from the I level or from outside applicants with prior experience in wastewater operations. Must have a Grade II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate.
Wastewater Facilities Operator III
- Under minimal supervision, this position involves planning, assigning, inspecting, and leading the work of others. Wastewater Facilities Operator III also performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant on assigned shifts, including the operation, maintenance, and care of equipment. This role may involve supervisory duties per California State Water Resources Control Board (CSWRCB) in the absence of the Plant Supervisor and requires a Grade III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification. Must have a Grade III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate.
In addition, all grade’s must have possession of or ability to obtain a Class B California driver's license with Air Brake endorsements and a satisfactory driving record. *If applicable, please attach a copy of all Wastewater Grade Certificates with application.

Key Responsibilities
- Inspect and monitor plant equipment and facilities, report issues, and adjust or stop equipment as needed for repairs. Operate and maintain chemical equipment to meet standards. Troubleshoot and fix minor electrical problems.
- Read meters, gauges, and instruments to ensure everything works properly. Record operations, test results, and maintenance activities in logs and reports.
- Monitor wastewater treatment processes, clean and maintain equipment, and make repairs as needed.
- Work as a team to maintain and repair sewer lines, storm drains, and lift stations. Use equipment like vactor trucks to clean sewer lines and clear blockages
- Operate heavy and light equipment, use tools, and drive vehicles safely. Perform equipment repairs when necessary.
- Operate pumps, valves, and other equipment manually or through automated systems to control wastewater flow. Take samples and run tests to ensure processes are running efficiently.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
