What are the responsibilities and job description for the HVAC Mechanic position at City of Richmond?
Perform routine preventive maintenance (daily, monthly) on HVAC and refrigeration equipment to ensure essential building systems—such as boilers, chillers, water pumps, and air conditioning—operate correctly and meet required specifications. Conduct scheduled inspections, troubleshoot problems, and make repairs. Install and replace HVAC and refrigeration equipment as needed. Complete administrative tasks, including preparing and submitting work orders, performing data entry and programming on electronic equipment, purchasing materials and parts, submitting quotes, and contacting vendors for pricing and delivery. As assigned, troubleshoot, design, and build test equipment. Adhering to all safety policies and procedures. Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED
- One year of vocational/technical training in HVAC systems/refrigeration
- Two years of HVAC experience
- An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid CFC certification from the Environmental Protection Agency
- Valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record and a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire
- Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) Journeyman or Master HVAC License (preferred).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to climb, balance, stoop, crouch, kneel, see, and hear. The employee is frequently required to crawl, reach extending hands and arms in any direction, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger (pick, pinch, type or otherwise work primarily with fingers), grasp applying pressure to an object with fingers or palm, talk, feel, and use substantial repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and fingers. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
