Fleet Maintenance Specialist, Senior

The Department of General Services is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill the position of Fleet Maintenance Specialist, Senior in the Fleet Management Division. The incumbent is responsible for completing mechanical repairs and maintenance on City vehicles, including light- and heavy-duty vehicles, off-road equipment, fire equipment, and solid waste equipment. This position also serves as a technical resource across all Fleet maintenance shop operations and assists with developing technician knowledge, consistency, and safe repair practices throughout the division.


**Preference will be given to internal employees or current contractors**
  • Performing general inspections on vehicles and equipment and documenting discrepancies
  • Repairing and replacing vehicle parts such as engines, alternators, carburetors, batteries, tires, brakes, pumps, transmissions, gas tanks, headlights, wipers, fuel systems, suspensions, and other similar equipment
  • Performing routine preventive maintenance on vehicles, such as oil changes, filter changes, lubrication, and other routine maintenance
  • Assisting in the training and mentoring of technicians across all maintenance shops in proper diagnosing and repair techniques, preventive maintenance practices, documentation standards, shop safety practices, and the proper use of tools, equipment, and diagnostic resources
  • Serving as a technical resource for technicians performing maintenance and repair work on light-duty, heavy-duty, off-road, fire, solid waste, and other specialized fleet vehicles and equipment
  • Supporting consistent repair methods, quality expectations, documentation practices, and safe work habits across all Fleet maintenance shop areas
  • Making service calls and repairs to vehicles and equipment in the field
  • Consulting technical reference documentation, such as manufacturer and parts manuals, for technical information necessary for repairs
  • Preparing files, maintaining work logs, and maintenance sheets
  • Conducting state inspections and preventive maintenance inspections
  • Logging time and information into the computer database on a daily basis
  • Repairing and troubleshooting hydraulic systems
  • Other related duties as assigned
**City of Richmond Department of Public Works employees who perform duties in this class are considered essential employees and may be required to work during times of emergencies, natural disasters, and inclement weather**
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Four (4) years of automotive maintenance experience related to the assignment, with experience in one or more fleet maintenance environments, including light duty, heavy truck, off-road equipment, fire equipment, solid waste equipment, or other specialized fleet vehicles and equipment
  • Experience assisting with training, mentoring, or providing technical guidance to other technicians is preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record within 30 days of hire
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial driver's license with a satisfactory driving record within 6 months of hire
  • Virginia State Motor Vehicle Inspection License within 12 months of hire


Knowledge (some combination of the following):

  • Automotive and mechanical principles and theory, including fuel systems
  • Fire equipment
  • Familiarity with heavy and off-road equipment, light vehicles, hydraulics, etc., and other specialized fleet maintenance operations
  • Shop safety principles and standards
  • Training, mentoring, and knowledge-sharing practices for technician development
  • Diagnostic tools and equipment
 

Skills (some combination of the following):

  • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Database entry and management
  • Technical troubleshooting (electrical, automotive, etc.)
  • Oral and written communication, including the ability to explain repair procedures, diagnostic findings, and safe work practices to other technicians
  • Customer service
  • Using standard automotive hand tools/equipment
  • Mentoring technicians and reinforcing consistent shop practices across multiple maintenance areas
 

Abilities (some combination of the following):

  • Identify and understand automotive terminology
  • Read and understand manuals, specifications, etc.
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Adapt technical knowledge to varied fleet maintenance assignments across shop areas
  • Provide technical guidance, share job knowledge, and support technician development without assuming formal supervisory authority

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: Working conditions may include exposure to travel to other locations within the City of Richmond as well as outside of the City of Richmond; exposure to hazardous physical conditions such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, etc.; atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation; inadequate lighting; intense noise; and environmental hazards such as disruptive people, imminent danger, and a threatening environment. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach extending hands and arms in any direction, stand, push, pull, lift, finger (picking, pinching or otherwise working primarily with fingers), grasp applying pressure to an object with fingers or palms, talk, see, and hear. The employee is frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, crouch, crawl, walk, feel and use substantial repetitive motions of the wrists, hands and/or fingers. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Salary : $55,825 - $86,306
