Description

The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is seeking qualified candidates to fill multiple Refuse Collector positions within the Solid Waste Division. This position will be responsible for collecting and removing waste, garbage, or refuse and emptying trash cans or bins along designated routes.

Duties include but are not limited to

  • Collecting refuse and yard waste on a specific assigned route;
  • Operating hydraulic lift system;
  • Assisting driver with rear vision and traffic obstructions;
  • Locating trash can violations and labeling trash cans;
  • Explaining container regulations to citizens and assisting citizens as needed;
  • Assisting other crews as needed.
**This position is considered Essential, which means that the incumbent is required to work when the City is closed due to public emergencies, critical or hazardous conditions, or inclement weather**
This individual may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays or on-call, as needed.

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Refuse collector experience preferred
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • None required


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Safe working principles and practices
  • Accident prevention

  • Operating instructions for cleaning equipment

  • Appropriately addressing upset citizens with complains
  • Providing traffic directions to Refuse Truck Operators to ensure safe operation of the truck
  • Customer service

Abilities (some combination of the following):

  • Pay attention to detail

  • Follow safety standards
  • Make decisions
  • Work outdoors in every type of weather including adverse weather conditions

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly stand, walk, push, lift, grasp, hear, see, and perform repetitive motions; frequently balance, stoop, crouch, reach, pull, finger, feel, and talk; and occasionally climb, kneel, and crawl. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work. This is considered heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
