Job Summary:

We need you to help ensure that the picturesque, tree-filled City of Richmond Heights, Ohio, is a community-first, actively safe city!

The City of Richmond Heights, Ohio, is looking for someone to assist our students in crossing the street safely. Under the direction of the Chief of Police, the School Crossing Guard is responsible for managing traffic while ensuring pedestrian safety near our local schools. The Guard will also instruct children in basic safety procedures for crossing roads.

School Crossing Guards work approximately 10-20 hours per week, based on 10 hours per guard, Monday through Friday, during the regular school year at designated locations in the city, assisting elementary and secondary students. The city is looking to hire one additional Guard.

Duties include:

· Regulating, directing, and controlling pedestrians and bicyclists at a designated school crossing while children go to and from school past such intersections.

· Determine traffic movement when traffic signals are not controlling, and remain alert to prevent children from attempting to cross the street when traffic is moving.

· Determining when children can cross intersections not equipped with traffic control devices and directing them to cross rapidly and orderly.

· Stop and hold secular traffic for enough time to direct the children across the intersection safely.

· Guide the children to ensure compliance with traffic control device regulations and reinforce their pedestrian safety training.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

· Basic principles and practices of safety.

· Methods and techniques of basic first aid and C.P.R.

· Ways and techniques of assisting children across busy streets.

· Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Desired Qualifications:

· Formal or informal education or training ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

· Some experience working with children is desirable.

License or Certificate:

· Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.

· Possession of, or ability to obtain, appropriate, valid first aid and C.P.R. Certificates; preferred.

Physical Requirements:

· Environment: outdoor pedestrian/vehicular traffic zones; exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, moving objects/vehicles, and inclement weather.

· Physical: essential and marginal functions may require maintaining the physical condition necessary for walking or standing for prolonged periods, using hands and arms for signaling, light lifting, and carrying.

· Vision: the ability to see in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents; vision sufficient for distinguishing colors and depth perception.

· Hearing: listening to the normal audio range with or without correction.
