Starting Salary: $52,639

 

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate skilled trades work maintaining vehicles and equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Public Works Director.

Essential Functions

Performs maintenance and repair of city vehicles and equipment.

Tracks all maintenance of vehicles and equipment using various software.

Maintains workshop and equipment yard.

Assists with purchases and sales of vehicles and equipment as well as yearly budgets.

Assists public works crews as needed.

Removes snow on city roads and city properties.

Trains public works employees on all vehicles and equipment.

Performs various metal and wood fabrications as needed on vehicles, equipment and other projects.

Operates and drives heavy machinery and equipment to perform tasks as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of automotive cars, trucks, construction and maintenance equipment; thorough knowledge of and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery; thorough knowledge of safe work practices; ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken automotive parts; ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams and installation and repair charts; ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately; ability to prepare and file simple written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and vendors.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED required and considerable experience maintaining vehicles and equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing and pushing or pulling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Special Requirements

Valid commercial driver's license with Class A endorsement, or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.
