Join the City of Richmond Community Services Recreation Department as a Lifeguard or Senior Lifeguard! 

Are you an experienced lifeguard with strong leadership skills, a passion for safety, and a knack for problem-solving? We’re seeking a highly motivated individual to step into the role of Lifeguard or Senior Lifeguard. As a Senior Lifeguard, you’ll work under the general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor to build and lead a dynamic lifeguard team, oversee staff scheduling, and supervise daily operations. You’ll also play a pivotal role in conducting team-building activities, leading in-service skills training, and ensuring a safe, enjoyable aquatic environment. Hourly salary for this classification is as high as:
  •  $22.76 at the top of the range for Lifeguard
  •  $23.92 at the top of the range for Senior Lifeguard

*The City of Richmond reserves the option to hire at either the Lifeguard or Senior Lifeguard level based on the candidate's qualifications in relation to the minimum experience required (see minimum qualifications).
The Senior Lifeguard is distinguished from the Pool Manager by responsibility limited to the lifeguard program and may work under close direction of the Pool Manager or the Assistant Pool Manager. This position is distinguished from the Lifeguard by overall program responsibilities, training and skills.

The Ideal Candidate will have a background in lifeguarding, a natural aptitude for leadership, and the ability to instruct diverse groups effectively. This role is an excellent opportunity for someone ready to make a positive impact in the community while advancing their career in aquatics.

  • Monitor, direct and evaluate lifeguard personnel.
  • Assist with recruiting, interviewing and scheduling lifeguard personnel.
  • Monitor activities to prevent accidents; educate and direct swimmers regarding unsafe behavior; recognize and respond to emergencies; rescue swimmers in distress; and provide first aid care for medical emergencies, injury and sudden illness that may include heart attack, bleeding, spinal injury or drowning.
  • Maintain simple records and reports.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Lifeguard
  • Fifteen (15) years of age.
  • Graduation from or currently enrolled in an institution working toward a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

Senior Lifeguard
  • One (1) year of college or university work in recreation, physical education, or related field.
  • Two (2) years of lifeguard experience, or the equivalent combination of training and experience.

Required License or Certifications
  • Current Lifeguard training certification.
  • American Red Cross Head Lifeguard certification or equivalent.
  • Current First Aid and CPR for Public Safety Personnel in accordance with Title 22 of the California Code of Regulations.

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement

REQUIRED KSA FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF JOB DUTIES

Knowledge of:
  • Lifeguarding
  • First Aid
  • Public safety and the role of the professional rescuer
  • Rules and regulations of an aquatic facility
  • Swimming rescue techniques, 
  • CPR and first aid
  • Accident prevention and accident management
  • Intervention and conflict resolution strategies
  • Legal duty to perform
  • Instruction techniques and materials related to aquatic activities
  • Special issues associated with conducting activities for citizens possessing a wide variety of physical and mental abilities
  • Team building techniques and supervision of lifeguards
  • Methods of program evaluation and performance evaluation
  • Health and safety regulations
  • Current methods and standards for lifeguarding facilities.

Ability to:
  • Swim with proficiency and endurance
  • Perform and assist rescues
  • Enforce the rules and regulations of an aquatic facility
  • Perform CPR and first aid
  • Work a flexible schedule including holidays, nights, and weekends
  • Work indoors and outdoors in a variety of temperatures
  • Use vision and hearing to identify and evaluate field emergencies, and to respond physically to these emergencies quickly and appropriately
  • Communicate effectively in writing and verbally with personnel and the public, in both routine operations and emergency situations
  • Develop and implement aquatic programs for a variety of skill levels

  • Provide leadership, direction and training of lifeguard personnel

Qualifying Phase: All completed applications will be evaluated based on job-related qualifications criteria, which could include desirable qualifications and the specific needs of the hiring department(s). Candidates may be screened for better qualified.

Application Appraisal: The evaluation process for this position will include an application appraisal. A limited number of the most qualified candidates, determined by their application materials, will be assessed and scored based on job-related qualifications and their answers to the supplemental questions in the application. This assessment will use a structured rating matrix. An Employment List will be created, and your placement on this list will be based solely (100%) on the information provided in your Employment Application and your responses to the Supplemental Questions. A minimum score of 70% is required to pass.

Having all of the minimum qualifications does not guarantee advancement in the hiring process.

Employment Eligibility List: A ranking of "A" (Best Qualified), "B" (Well Qualified), or "C" (Qualified) is required to achieve a position on the Employment Eligibility List.  This List will be in effect for a maximum of two (2) years; however, the list may be canceled without notice after six (6) months.

Background Check and Tuberculosis Testing: Candidates will be required to complete a background check and Tuberculosis testing as a condition of employment.
