What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard position at City of Richfield, MN?

HOURS

The pool will be open June 12 – August 30, 2026. Work hours will vary based on operational needs and staffing levels, with shifts scheduled during days, evenings, and weekends. This position is seasonal and temporary in nature.

Overtime is paid for hours worked in excess of 48 hours per workweek.

NATURE OF WORK

Under general supervision of the Facility Manager and reporting directly to the Pool Supervisor, this position assists with daily pool operations, provides training and mentorship to lifeguard staff, and performs lifeguarding duties as assigned. Monitors pool activities from a lifeguard station, ensures a clean and safe environment for patrons, verify equipment is in good condition, and ensures lifeguards follow established procedures. Tests and monitors pool water chemistry to ensure compliance with health and safety codes. Assists patrons and takes appropriate action to correct unsafe or unacceptable behavior.

HIRING INCENTIVEA $100 end-of-season retention incentive will be awarded to employees who remain employed through the end of the season, work a minimum of 200 hours, and maintain satisfactory performance and attendance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Maintain alert and attentive surveillance of the pool, aquatic features, and surrounding facility areas.
  • Monitor use of slides, diving boards, and other aquatic attractions.
  • Respond to emergency situations using appropriate lifeguarding, rescue, and first aid techniques.
  • Know, follow, and enforce pool rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Recognize unsafe conditions and take corrective action.
  • Complete accident and incident reports as required.
  • Assist with admitting patrons, greeting groups, and explaining facility rules.
  • Perform daily custodial duties to maintain a clean and safe facility.
  • Assist with daily operations, including opening and closing procedures.
  • Monitor patron activity throughout the facility, including deck, lap lanes, play features, and concession areas.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patrons and staff; address customer service issues as needed.
  • Attend required orientation, training, staff, and planning meetings.
  • Work scheduled shifts and report to work on time and prepared.
  • Support the City’s mission, vision, and values and contribute to an equitable, inclusive, and respectful workplace.

COMPETENCIES

  • Knowledge of lifeguard procedures and safety practices.
  • Ability to perform water rescues and administer first aid using proper techniques.
  • Ability to swim required distances, including completion of a 300-meter swim.
  • Ability to remain alert and respond decisively and appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Ability to dive and reach the deepest areas of the pool as required for lifeguarding duties.
  • Ability to interact with the public and enforce rules in a professional manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and patrons.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and accept direction and feedback.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those whose first language may not be English. 

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE

Required before start date:

  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be at least 15 years of age by the hire date.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous lifeguard experience.
  • Strong swimming ability beyond minimum certification requirements.
  • Experience working in a public aquatic or recreation setting.
  • Experience providing customer service in a public-facing role.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts, including evenings and weekends.
  • Fluency in Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese, or other non-English languages commonly spoken in the City of Richfield.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is primarily performed in a public swimming pool environment. The position requires stamina for physical activity, including moderate to heavy lifting of pool equipment or assisting children and adults who may require removal from the pool. Ability to work in heat, sun, and varying weather conditions is required. 

The physical demands that are described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.  

Must have the ability to:

  • Stand, stoop, kneel, reach, bend, climb, push, and pull materials and supplies weighing approximately 20–60 lbs.
  • See and hear adults and children in crowded and noisy conditions and read printed materials and computer screens; communicate in person, by telephone, and by radio.
  • Use finger dexterity to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or operate safety equipment.
  • Swim required distances, dive to pool depths as determined by certification authorities, and assist in lifting or removing patrons from the water using proper techniques and equipment.
