What are the responsibilities and job description for the Student Intern - Council Relations position at City of Reno?
The City of Reno has an exciting opportunity for a paid Student Intern! Selected candidates may also enroll in a for-credit internship course through an accredited University or College.
This internship, in the Council Relations Division of the City Manager's Office, affords participants the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the internal functions and processes of local government, while refining skills in the areas of administration, communication, and problem solving. The intern will have the opportunity to participate in professional development activities and training with City staff.
The intern will work alongside and support the Council Relations Team. Responsibilities include day-to-day administrative tasks such as mail distribution, proofreading/editing/drafting official documents, and purchasing supplies. Additionally, interns will greet council members, visitors and staff, conduct research, contribute to special projects, run errands, and assist with public meetings. Each week interns will log new skills gained or strengthened with a focus on future application.
A successful intern will demonstrate strong organizational skills and attention to detail in handling administrative tasks. They will exhibit excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with a professional demeanor. Proactivity and a willingness to take on new challenges, as well as the ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment are also essential attributes.
We recognize interns may possess a variety of education and experience, we require the intern to be:
Enrolled at an accredited University or College in upper-division courses
Superior academic credentials, effective interpersonal skills, and strong writing and computer skills including MS Office
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Excellent customer service skills, including professional phone etiquette
Basic knowledge of office procedures and equipment
Interest in or familiarity with local government and community needs such as financial management, planning, computer systems, community engagement, etc.
Self-motivation, and ability to work well with others
Spanish-English Bilingual highly preferred.
Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license is required.
This position is exempt from the Civil Service System. This is a temporary position and no benefits are offered.
