Job Description:
The City of Reidsville is pleased to announce a vacancy in our Treatment Plant Operator Trainee program. This is an exciting program for people looking for a career that improves the quality of life for their entire community. As our next Trainee, you will be given the chance to transform water from Lake Reidsville into clean, safe drinking water for the residents of Reidsville and Greensboro. You will learn how to treat sewage so that it can be safely discharged into our local creek-system without harming our native wildlife or vegetation. During your apprenticeship with the City of Reidsville, you will learn to operate both our water treatment plant and our wastewater treatment plant. Approximately every 90 days you will move from one plant to the other, learning and working beside experienced treatment plant operators with technical knowledge and hands-on experience. You will be given the opportunity to participate in formal training at the state level, and you will sit for certification exams in both areas. After receiving your certification(s), you will be eligible for placement at the plant of your choice, upon the availability of a vacant position. If there isn’t a vacancy at the time you earn your certification, you will have the option of continuing to rotate between the two plants, or focusing on only one plant as you work towards additional certifications.

Work Schedule:
During the trainee portion of this position, the normal schedule schedule is from 7:00 to 3:30 shift Monday through Friday. Once you are ready to operate the plant(s) independently, this position will transition to 12-hour shifts, with weekend shifts and overtime.
STARTING SALARY: $31,200
Job Duties:
- Assists in the operation of a water treatment and/or wastewater treatment plant;
- Monitors the process used in the treatment operations;
- Collects samples and performs basic laboratory testing;
- Maintains records and enters data into operational logs and computer systems;
- Performs occasional preventive maintenance on equipment;
- Maintains a neat and orderly work area;
- Performs minor office administration tasks such as filing, faxing, etc.;
- Performs light housekeeping duties;
- Performs related work as required.
- Required Qualifications
Abilities: * Read and understand technical repair manuals.
- Observe and interpret gauges, charts, etc. based on data; act quickly and independently in operational emergencies.
- Maintain records, logs and prepare special reports; follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively verbally; deal effectively and courteously with associates and the general public.
- Must work cooperatively as a team member and respond courteously to co-workers and citizens.
- Acquisition of a NC C-Surface Water Operator’s and/or Wastewater Operator 1 Certification must be completed within two years of employment.
- A valid NC Class C driver’s license.

- High school diploma with demonstrated skills in mathematics and science.

- Physical Demands:
- Performs bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, crawling, and reaching both to ground level and overhead.
- Must be able to distinguish primary colors.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds routinely.
- Ability to push and/or pull 75 – 100 pounds occasionally.
- Must have sufficient mobility to move around the plant numerous times per shift to observe data and equipment.
- Ability to hold and grip objects.
- May be subject to standing for long periods of time.
Both indoor and outdoor working environment with possible exposure to a variety of extreme weather conditions, constant and extreme noise; subject to a variety of mechanical, electrical, chemical, toxic waste, and other safety hazards associated with treatment plant facilities and equipment; possible exposure to disease, fumes, and strong odors as related to water treatment operations.
