ABOUT THE POSITION

The Redwood City Fire Department is seeking individuals for the position of Cadet Firefighter. The Cadet Firefighter Program is designed to allow students an opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of fire department operations. Fire Department Cadets spend a minimum of 48 hours and a maximum of 96 hours per month at the firehouse, participating in calls for service, station duties, and training. Cadets will also be expected to attend department-sponsored community functions outside of their 96-hour monthly commitment. Though the goal is to immerse the cadet into all aspects of fire department life, they are not allowed to participate in situations deemed Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH).


This Fire Cadet position is a non-benefited volunteer position.


Ideal Candidate

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate is an individual capable of meeting the physical and mental demands of a firefighter. Cadets must possess the ability to perform strenuous work for extended periods of time. They must be capable of lifting heavy objects and working safely with, and around, machinery, tools, and other firefighting equipment. Cadets may be called upon to work long hours, day or night, and live in tight quarters. Each cadet should be able to work independently, as well as possess the ability to participate as a team member.


QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:


  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Possession of a current EMT-B certification or Paramedic license
  • Possession of medical insurance prior to first ride-a-long
  • Physically capable of performing the essential job functions of this classification

Licenses & Certificates

  • A valid California Driver’s License
  • Satisfactory driving record is highly desirable.
  • Possession of a current EMT-B certification or Paramedic license

A City application is required. Prior to appointment, candidates will be required to pass a background check (at no cost to the candidate) including the following:


  • Criminal History Check
  • DMV Check
  • DOJ Fingerprint Check
  • Pre-Employment Physical Exam

Special Instructions

A City application and supplemental questionnaire is required upon submission. Applications must be filled out completely. Failure to list work experience, and education or training or stating “See Resume” in the work experience section of the application will be considered an incomplete application. Resumes may be attached separately, but resumes will not be accepted in lieu of a city application.

Interviews will be held in-person on October 28th, 2025. No remote or virtual interviews.
