Under general direction, manages and supervises police and civilian employees engaged in general field patrol and station activities on an assigned shift, or to have charge of a specialized police activity such as criminal investigation, traffic control-investigation-engineering and enforcement, narcotics investigation, gang enforcement, training, staff and personnel investigation.

Examples of duties may include, but may not be limited to, the following:
  • Plans, prioritizes, assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of sworn law enforcement staff involved in traffic and field patrol, investigations, crime prevention, community relations, and related services and activities; supervise non-sworn staff in dispatch, records, property and evidence, crime analysis, and volunteers as assigned;
  • Serves as first level supervisor/Watch Commander for assigned shift; prepares and administers briefings;
  • Assigns areas of patrol; supervises and directs sworn and non-sworn staff and activities on assigned shifts;
  • Conducts personnel, equipment, and building inspections;
  • Prepares, process, and maintains a variety of written reports and records pertaining to assigned activities including daily activity reports;
  • Completes payroll for assigned personnel;
  • Reviews incident reports, required forms, records, and related documents prepared by subordinates to ensure accuracy and timely completion;
  • Conducts a continuing review of assigned activities to identify problems and develop recommendations for improving services;
  • Recommends and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives;
  • Establishes schedules and methods for providing effective law enforcement services;
  • Implements approved policies and procedures;
  • Provides training, guidance, and counseling to assigned personnel;
  • Completes employee performance evaluations and reviews as required; promotes career development of subordinates;
  • Responds to major crimes, accident scenes, and emergencies; assumes initial command; establishes field command posts and implements the Incident Command System;
  • May act as incident commander until such time as a higher-ranking person assumes command;
  • Assumes responsibility for assigned collateral functions including special programs, projects, or department-wide functions or activities;
  • Supervises specialized units including Multiple Enforcement Team, Narcotics and Vice, Traffic, Investigations, Air Support Unit, Community Policing, Crime Analysis, Property and Evidence, Hostage Negotiation Team, Field Training Officers, Reserves, Volunteers, Explorers, Chaplains, and related assignments;
  • Conducts internal affairs investigations and investigations of citizen complaints as necessary;
  • Supervises and/or participates in the gathering of evidence, questioning of witnesses, and the apprehension of suspects;
  • Speaks before groups and represent the department and City at meetings and conferences; and
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Experience:
  • Completion of probation as a Corporal/Detective with the Redlands Police Department.
  • Five years of experience as a sworn officer including three years of experience as a full-time sworn officer with the City of Redlands prior to the closing date of the application.
Education:
  • Completion of 90 units of college level coursework at an accredited institution.
Licenses and Certificates:
  • Must be eligible and have applied for an Advanced Certificate issued by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).
Special Requirements:
Essential functions and duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:
  • Ability to travel to different sites and locations;
  • Regularly required to talk or hear.  Required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift up to 50 lbs;
  • Endure exposure to heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards;
  • Available for shift work, on-call, and stand-by.

Failure to provide all required documents will result in elimination from the selection process.
