Under supervision, performs a variety of skilled work related to water and/or wastewater plant and equipment including wells, pumps, and electrical motors; and to perform welding and fabrication work as necessary.  Exercises no supervision.

Distinguishing CharacteristicsPlant Mechanic I:

This is the entry level in the class series. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgement in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is often used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience. 

Plant Mechanic II:

This is the full journey level in the class series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the I level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative.  Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.  Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and positions at the II level are normally filled by advancement from the I Level requiring 3 years of experience, successful performance, budget availability, and management recommendation.  When filled from the outside, the employee is required to have prior related experience which allows the employee to meet the qualification standards for the II level.

  • Participates in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the City's wastewater and water facilities;
  • Maintains, installs, inspects, modifies, and replaces electrical systems and equipment related to water and wastewater treatment and municipal facilities;
  • Investigates complaints and reports of electrical malfunctions;
  • Adjusts, repairs, replaces or removes defective equipment;
  • Develops a schedule for and performs regular inspections and preventative maintenance of equipment and machinery;
  • Troubleshoots electrical and mechanical problems and determines the extent of repairs;
  • Performs electric, Arc and oxy-acetylene welding in the fabricating and repair of equipment, structures, pipes, tools, and other related parts;
  • Designs, lay out, and fabricate equipment parts; rebuilds broken equipment and parts as necessary;
  • Performs major overhaul work on engines;
  • Operates wells and boosters and checks for engine shut down safety; adjusts flow as directed;
  • Operates heavy equipment including tractors and crane trucks;
  • Assists other personnel in the performance of emergency duties as necessary;
  • Maintains accurate records and logs; order supplies, parts, and materials; pick up parts as necessary; 
  • Trains other personnel as necessary; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Experience

Plant Mechanic I:

  • Two years of experience performing maintenance and repair of facilities, structures, and equipment.

Plant Mechanic II:

  • Three years of experience performing maintenance and repair of facilities, structures, and equipment.

Education

Plant Mechanic I/II:

  • Equivalent to a high school diploma.

License or Certificate

Plant Mechanic I:

  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Class C California driver's license at the time of appointment.

  • Possess and maintain a California Water Environment Association Mechanical Technologist Grade I Certification or ability to obtain within 18 months.

When assigned to Water:
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Class B driver's license within 9 months of appointment.
  • Possession of certification from the State Water Resources Control Board as a water treatment operator or water distribution operator is desirable.

Plant Mechanic II:

  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Class C California driver's license at the time of appointment
  • Possess and maintain a California Water Environment Association Mechanical Technologist Grade I Certification.

When assigned to Water:
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Class B driver's license.
  • Possession of certification from the State Water Resources Control Board as a water treatment operator or water distribution operator.

Special Requirements:

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: 

  • Ability to work in a standard office environment; ability to travel to different sites and locations;
  • Regularly required to talk or hear.  Regularly required to stand, sit, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, and climb, use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds;
  • Exposure to outdoors, heat, noise, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards.
