Location: Rapid City, SD
Job Summary: Collect wastewater, sludge, soil, stream, and other samples and perform chemical, and bacteriological analysis of the samples in compliance with, SOP, Standard Methods, and EPA Methods. Keeps accurate records of testing and observational data in compliance with City, State and Federal regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs physical, chemical, and microbiological analyses of samples using EPA, APHA, and Standard Methods approved methods.
- Operates, calibrates, programs, cleans and maintains glassware, equipment, and laboratory instrumentation including, but not limited to spectrophotometers, dissolved oxygen meters, pH/ISE meters and electrodes, autoclaves, analytical balances, drying ovens, muffle furnaces, incubators, and phase-contrast microscopes.
- Collects samples of liquids, solids, and gases from various wastewater treatment, composting, stream, and industrial sources using appropriate sampling procedures.
- Calculates test results, logs test results on appropriate bench sheets, and/or appends those results to the Laboratory Information Management System with a high degree of accuracy.
- Prepares reagents, standardized solutions, microbial culture media, etc.
- Practices standard laboratory safety and health procedures.
- Assists in maintaining the laboratory quality assurance/control program.
- Performs other such duties and functions as required and/or as necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this position.
Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree from an accredited two-year college in Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Engineering or similar course of study required; one year of related experience desired. Bachelor’s degree in Science in Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, or similar course of study is preferred.
- Familiarity with pertinent analytical methods is required. Knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, laboratory practices, and QAQC procedures sufficient to perform the essential functions is also preferred.
- Must possess a valid South driver’s license or the ability to obtain within 30 days from date of hire.
- Ability to work varied schedules and on-call schedules to accommodate 24 hour a day, 7 day a week availability.
Work Environment:
Work is performed indoor (in a laboratory and office where interruptions may occur) and outdoors (onsite and offsite) in all weather types. While performing this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms; walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; or crawl and smell. Employee must occasionally lift up to 40lbs alone, or more as a team. Specific vision requirements of this job include color vision, close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and an ability to focus. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and the risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. These conditions could be wet and/or humid, hot or cold.
