Job Description
We are seeking a skilled and safety-focused Heavy Equipment Operator to join our Stormwater System Maintenance team. In this role, you’ll operate a variety of heavy equipment to maintain, repair, and improve stormwater infrastructure including catch basins and storm drains, assist with pipe repair and maintenance, operate dump trucks with snow removal equipment during inclement weather, and perform general street maintenance activities. This position may involve working in confined spaces, including underground drainage structures. As you learn and develop in this role, you will be responsible for operating a range of haul vehicles, including flat bed and dump trucks, hydraulic cranes, as well as wide variety of construction equipment. Additionally, you will be ambitious and proactive by undertaking other assigned duties as required and seeking opportunities to improve yourself and those around you.

Joining our Transportation Maintenance Division will provide an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in the maintenance of critical infrastructure such as sidewalks, curb and gutter, asphalt, medians, and storm drains.
The Transportation Stormwater Maintenance Unit is responsible for performing daily inspections, repair, and maintenance of the City’s stormwater assets. Stormwater assets are defined as pipes, drains, and structures of all sizes that make up the City’s stormwater system.
Duties and Responsibilities

Operates various types of heavy equipment- Performs unskilled or semi-skilled general maintenance such as cleaning storm drains and catch basins
- Selects proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks
- Performs work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations
- Performs storm drain and catch basin cleaning and repairs
- Performs concrete and masonry maintenance and repairs
- Performs pipe maintenance and repairs
- Operates automated or walk behind leaf machine for leaf collection
- Inspects and maintains tools and equipment by changing out worn or damaged parts, monitoring safe operational use, and/or cleaning equipment
- Inspects facilities and structures; identifies and documents required repairs
- Will be required to work extended hours on rotating shifts during emergencies and inclement weather
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency; 1 to 3 years' experience in medium to heavy construction equipment operation or related work
- Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted
Licenses or Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire

Work Environment:
Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment, construction site, or in a vehicle. Employees may occasionally work in confined spaces, warehouse environment, or shop environment.
Work Exposures:
There is frequent exposure to extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and loud noises. Employees may occasionally be exposed to individuals who are hostile or irate, communicable diseases, and toxic or caustic chemicals or substances.
