Job Description
We’re seeking a highly motivated individual to manage the traffic signal shop environment by supporting field crews working towards maintaining safe and efficient transportation systems. You’ll play a vital role in day-to-day operations, ensuring sufficient materials, equipment, and tools for fellow staff members while upholding high standards of quality and safety. You’ll oversee inventories, audits, and the repair/replacement program for electronic equipment. You’ll also be involved in helping manage the day-to-day operations with some oversight of field projects. As a leader, you’ll foster a positive team culture, support staff development, and continuously seek ways to improve processes and drive operational efficiency. About You:
Must have a background in traffic signal maintenance and construction management including knowledge of electronics and ability to read plans / prints. Should demonstrate excellent organizational and communication skills, a commitment to safety, and the ability to motivate and manage team members.
About Us:
The Traffic Engineering group at the City of Raleigh is responsible for maintaining the city's and local NCDOT traffic signals to ensure safe and efficient travel for all road users. Our team focuses on the maintenance and upgrades / installs of traffic signals that guide, inform, and protect drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. By prioritizing attention to detail and adherence to safety standards, we help maintain a well-organized and accessible transportation network.
Duties and Responsibilities

Oversee the Asset Management of materials and equipment consisting of ordering, shelving, inventory, and auditingSupervise staff on electronic repair, certification program, and asset management
Review plans, evaluate, and set up equipment for use
Monitor program inventory and operational budgets; review and track expenditures to ensure budget compliance
Serves as a technical resource for engineering, field staff, and other stakeholders
Works with vendors on new products and techniques
Ensures compliance with applicable regulatory standards, service quality, operational and organizational policies and procedures
Oversees and manages programs dealing with specialized equipment such as visual and audible devices
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency; 3 to 5 years’ experience in traffic signals, electronics, construction management, or related fieldOR
Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted
Licenses or Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Associate degree in electronics, construction management, or related field. Five plus years of experience in traffic signals, electronics, construction management, or related field.

Ability to:
- Monitor, evaluate, and assess engineering projects and functional operations
- Compose and prepare original reports, documents and presentations
- Communicate effectively with City staff, contractors, and the general public
- Research industry trends, solutions and best practices
- Facilitate group discussions and build consensus using persuasive reasoning

Physical Effort:
Medium: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Work Environment:
Employees will frequently work in an office or similar indoor environment and in a vehicle.
Work Exposures:
Employees will occasionally be exposed to individuals who are hostile or irate, extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals or substances and loud noises.
