The City of Raleigh is seeking a skilled and dependable Equipment Operator to join our Asphalt Operations team. This position performs a variety of maintenance, repair, waste removal, and equipment operation tasks in support of City infrastructure and public works services.

About Us:
The Divisions within Transportation Maintenance are responsible for sidewalk maintenance, curb and gutter maintenance, asphalt maintenance, storm sewer maintenance, right of way mowing, downtown cleaning, resurfacing and pavement preservation, bridge maintenance and private development/utility inspections. The 218 person staff maintains over 1,130 miles of streets and sidewalks, over 33,000 curb ramps, 3.2 million linear feet of stormwater pipes and over 32,000 drainage inlets.
Duties and Responsibilities
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
- Assists in asphalt and pavement maintenance, including repair of potholes, full-depth patching of damaged asphalt, and repair of utility cuts
- Operates a dump truck and other construction equipment such as a roller and air compressor
- Hauls personnel, equipment, and materials to and from the job site
- Serves as part of the ground crew setting up traffic control, removing damaged asphalt, and cleaning or prepping the area for new asphalt
- Participates in and operates equipment associated with the seasonal loose-leaf collection program and snow and ice removal program
- Required to work extended hours during emergencies and inclement weather
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency; Less than 1 year experience in light to medium construction equipment operation or related workOR
Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted
Licenses or Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire

Work Environment and Physical Effort:
Very Heavy: Exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, more than 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or more than 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Work Environment:
Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment, street environment (near moving traffic), at a construction site and in and around vehicles. Employees may occasionally be in confined spaces, and warehouse or shop environments.
Work Exposures:
There is frequent exposure to extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), moving mechanical parts, fumes and airborne particles and loud noises. Employees may occasionally interact with individuals who are hostile or irate and communicable diseases.
