About You:
This position oversees the daily operations of solid waste collection services, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as departmental policies and procedures. The primary purpose of this role is to plan, coordinate, and supervise residential and commercial collection activities while ensuring the safe, efficient, and effective delivery of services to the community. Responsibilities include managing staff recruitment, training, scheduling, and performance; overseeing operational budgets and equipment maintenance; developing collection routes and schedules; analyzing operational data to improve efficiency and service delivery; responding to customer inquiries and citizen concerns; maintaining records and reports; and collaborating with internal departments and external agencies to support the City’s waste management goals and commitment to exceptional public service.

- Supervises, manages, and evaluates assigned employees and makes decisions about hiring, discipline and/or termination of employees; prioritizes and assigns work; develops and oversees employee work schedules and approves time away from work; provides and/or facilitates employee training and development; addresses employee concerns and/or problems; counsels and/or disciplines as appropriate’ completes employee performance appraisals; determines or makes recommendations regarding new hire salaries and salary changes; and acts as liaison between employees and management
- Oversees daily solid waste operations and activities. Ensures staff follow all policies and protocols to maintain a safe work environment
- Facilitates the diagnosis, repair, service, and maintenance of heavy and light duty vehicles and equipment. Determines the need for minor or intermediate repairs or replacement of components, and schedules repairs and upfits to minimize impact to operations of solid waste collection
- Monitors equipment status to ensure readiness safety and serviceability. Completes specifications sheets for ordering new or replacement equipment, as needed.
- Maintains records of repairs and schedules for preventative maintenance
- Enters and updates system data related to work orders and activity; maintains activity logs, records, filles and reports
- Responds to, investigates customer complaints, and resolves service issues. Acts as liaison to City departments, vendors and other stakeholders
- Oversees and ensures the cleanliness and general organization and upkeep of shop, tools, equipment and supplies
Education and Experience
High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency; 5 to7 years’ experience in residential/commercial solid waste collection, supervisory, or a related fieldOR
Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted
Required Licenses or Certifications
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

Work Environment and Physical Effort:
Sedentary: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Work Environment: Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment, at a construction site and in and around vehicles. Employees may occasionally work in an office or similar indoor environment, near moving traffic, and in confined spaces.
Work Exposure: There is frequent exposure to fumes and airborne particles and loud noises. Employees may occasionally interact with individuals who are hostile or irate, in extreme cold (below 32 degrees) in extreme heat (above 100 degrees) and around moving mechanical parts.

Salary : $68,300 - $102,500
