What are the responsibilities and job description for the Preventative Maintenance and Tire Technician position at City of Raleigh North Carolina?
Passionate about vehicles and keeping them running in tip top shape? You’ll be able to do that every day in this position. This role is the key to vehicle readiness by ensuring the proper preventative maintenance is performed frequently. You’ll work on a variety of equipment from police cars to construction equipment. The type of work performed by this position is changing engine oil and filters, draining and filling coolant, replacing transmission filter or flushing the transmission fluid, replacing cabin air filters, replacing worn or damage tires, performing tire patch/plug repairs, and more.

Fleet Management Operations is a division within the Engineering Services Department. We have 81 full time positions that consists of technicians, service writers, parts staff, supervisors/managers, fiscal/accounting staff, and more! We have over 4,700 assets and perform preventative maintenance services and repairs on all types of equipment such as mowers, backhoes, police cars, SUV’s, trash trucks, dump trucks, and more. The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
- Identifies repair needs and performs skilled maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment, and/or prepares related work orders for external repairs and service
- Performs oil changes, transmission fluid services, replaces air, fuel, oil, cabin, coolant filters, wiper blades, and more
- Performs NC State emissions and Safety Inspections
- Installs decals, equipment numbers and GPS Devices on vehicles
- Transports vehicles
- Assists other technicians in various repairs
- Work may include performing light external automotive repair, body work and repair, and glass/window repair.
- Reviews repair work to ensure completeness and accurate maintenance records
- Gathers vendor information related to external repairs; determines vendors and initiates work orders; may deliver vehicles or equipment to vendors for repair work
- Performs shop office support which may include receiving calls and responding to inquiries; providing customer service; performing data entry; dispatching service; preparing reports; organizing and maintaining records, files, correspondence, parts and/or equipment
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency; 1 to 3 years’ experience in automotive repair, vehicle electronics, or a related fieldOR
Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted
Licenses or Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
- NC Safety and Emissions Inspection
Preferred Qualifications:
- Automotive Service Excellence Certification
Knowledge of:
- Specialized maintenance and repairs based on skillset
- Vehicle and police equipment electrical systems
- Fleet software and police equipment software
- Use of automotive electrical testing equipment
- Characteristics and repairs of automotive, police, and emergency equipment
- Automotive and electronic wiring
- Modern office practices and procedures including the use of standard office equipment and computer applications such as word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications
Skill in:
- Diagnosing, assessing, and evaluating maintenance and repair needs
- Utilizing computer and relevant software applications
- Providing customer service and interacting with vendors and internal City departments
- Performing vehicle equipment inspections and identifying issues related to functionality and safety
- Using automotive servicing tools and equipment for diagnostics and repairs

Ability to:
- Work as a team member with other Specialists and with Fleet Maintenance Technicians

Work Environment and Physical Effort:
Sedentary: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
Work Environment:
Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment, street environment, vehicle, or in a shop environment. Employees may occasionally work in an office or similar indoor environment.
Work Exposures:
There is frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts. Employees may occasionally be exposed to extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals or substances, and loud noises (85 decibels average over 8-hour working day such as heavy trucks, jack hammers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, construction).
