The Portsmouth Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic, collaborative, and tech-savvy individual to join the Youth Services Division. In this role, you will create a warm, welcoming, and respectful environment for children, teens, and their families.

Starting pay rate: $23.62 an hour per the Portsmouth Public Library Employees Local 1386 Union
Hours: 20 hours per week
Schedule: Includes evenings and weekends; additional hours will be discussed during the interview process

NATURE OF WORK
The purpose of this position is to perform library support services independently and collaboratively in the Youth Services Department. This position is responsible for providing efficient customer access to information and materials through extensive customer contact; completing tasks requiring proficiency and experience using office productivity software, the Internet and some technology devices; assisting with collection maintenance, youth and teen program planning and delivery including story times and book clubs; assisting with the library’s public relations and marketing initiatives and creating a welcoming, warm and respectful environment for library patrons and staff.


SUPERVISION
The Library Assistant II-Youth Services will work under the general direction of the Supervisor of Youth Services.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustration of the various types of work that may be performed. 1. Plans and executes story times for babies, toddlers, preschool aged children, and families.

2. Adopts a connected learning approach to presenting programs, classes, and events for and with youth, teens and caregivers so that they educate, inform and inspire.

3. Participates in outreach activities.

4. Utilizes the library’s integrated library system software, especially the circulation module, to answer patron questions, update records, place holds for items and more.

5. Assists patrons with finding reading and other library materials. Make recommendations from within the collection.

6. Assists patrons with using the library’s online catalogs.

7. Assists patrons with use of technology tools including public computers, self-check stations, printers, iPads and more.

8. Assists with collection maintenance including weeding, keeping collections and displays neat, clean and well organized.

9. Keeps usage of statistics daily.

10. Answers phone calls and respond to patron inquiries.

11. Enter and edit records in the library’s calendar and room management software.

12. Assists with training of library pages.

8. Plans and executes youth and teen programming.

9. Performs such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the employee's supervisor.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
An incumbent in this position consistently demonstrates a(n)...

1. Ability to design, develop and implement story times, youth and teen programs, workshops, and book discussions.

2. Knowledge about issues related to child development including developmental, recreational, and educational needs.

3. Working knowledge of standard library procedures and database search capabilities.

4. Proficiency in using current information technology in assigned functions.

5. Familiarity with office productivity software and a demonstrated ability to use computers, the Internet, and mobile technologies.

6. Ability to provide assistance in locating relevant print, media and other materials to meet the intellectual, business, academic, cultural and entertainment needs of customers.

7. Familiarity with best practices in youth and teen services as outlined by ALA, YALSA and other recognized organizations.

8. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing skills development and the judgment and public relations skills to deal appropriately with people.

9. Strong personal example of providing a high level of service to customers.

10. Ability to communicate effectively with the general public, City staff, and government officials at all levels.

ENVIRONMENT, WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT
Works in library environments which are subject to uncomfortably warm or cool temperatures. Continuous intellectual effort is required to maintain current knowledge of library resources, services and practices. The work requires lifting print and other materials, office equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds and being able to carry a reasonable quantity of materials from places where they are stored to places where they may be used. Evening and weekend hours are a requirement for this position.



MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have graduated from high school or have earned a graduate equivalent diploma (GED). Customer service experience is a must. Library experience is a plus.
