Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) is hiring people for part-time, year-round jobs in the Recreation Division!

Parks Activities Specialist Jobs:

  • Sports Official (15 )

  • Lead Attendant: Event Host (18 )

Parks Activities Specialist Pay:

  • The training pay is $19.61 for all Parks Activities Specialist jobs
  • Sports Official base pay is $33.50 or $38.95 (wage determined by grade level of officiating)
  • Lead Official base pay is $38.95 ($40.12 for hours training and scheduling other staff)
Recreation Associate Union:
These positions are not represented by a Union.

Position Summary

Portland Parks and Recreation is seeking basketball Sports Officials ages 15 or older, for our 2026-2027 youth sports leagues. On-court training teaches basic skills in officiating- no experience necessary! All Sports League Officials are required to complete Portland Parks and Recreations Sports Officials Training Certification Program. The training is seven weeks on Saturdays from 8:45am-12:00pm mid-October - December, two live game training Jamborees, and a post-season training in March.

Sports League Staff are responsible for officiating the games in a safe and professional manner. Applicants must demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and show active participation and enthusiasm on the court while serving as a positive role model to all participants and other staff. New Sports Officials will not be paid for training until the hiring process is complete.

Saturday Youth Basketball Season: January 9, 2027–mid-March 2027.

Job Type: Casual, Part-time. This job posting is for several positions, which are classified by the City of Portland as Parks Activities Specialists. 

Schedule: This job has flexible hours and might include working during the day, evenings, weekends, or holidays. The number of hours you work each week can change based on program needs, and there is no guarantee of work hours each week.

Locations: At various locations across Portland.

The following minimum qualifications required for these positions are: 

1. Ability to promote a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. 

2. General knowledge of assigned recreation area. 

3. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of people. 

4. Ability to recognize and respond to safety and emergency situations. 

5. Ability to problem-solve and respond to customer concerns. 

Basic Requirements:

  1. Basic understanding of the sport they are officiating.
  2. Ability to run to keep up with the pace of the play.
  3. Ability to work with diverse populations and coworkers.
  4. Some positions may require First Aid/CPR and/or other certifications.

Parks Activities Specialist - Sports League Staff

Position/s: Sports League Staff

The Sports League Staff are responsible for officiating games in a safe and professional manner. Applicants must demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and show active participation and enthusiasm on the court while serving as a positive role model to all participants and other staff.

Ages: 

Sports Official (Must be at least 15 years old)

Lead Sports Official (Must be at least 18 years old)

Pay Range (new employees start at the entry hourly rate):  

Sports Official base pay is $33.50 or $38.95 (wage determined by grade level of officiating)

Lead Official base pay is $38.95 ($40.12 for hours training and scheduling other staff)

Training Pay: Training pay is $19.61for all Sports League Staff positions.

Sports League Staff-Sports Official

Sports Officials are responsible for ensuring game safety and knowledge of the specific sport rules and supplemental rules as provided by Portland Parks and Recreation. Sports Officials must be able to communicate effectively with our Lead Officials, Event Hosts, and the public. Show active participation and enthusiasm on the court while serving as a positive role model to all participants and other staff.

Locations: Must be able to travel from site to site of the assigned area.

Shift Range: Saturdays 8:30am- 4:30pm

Sports League Staff: Lead Official

Lead Officials are responsible for planning, coordinating, and conducting on-court trainings for Sports Officials. Must have knowledge of current league rules and of the National High School Federation (NHFS) rules. Prior experience mentoring officials is preferred. Ability to schedule officials and assign games in scheduling software, such as RefTown. You must be able to handle conflicts, cancelations and respond to quick game day situations. Lead Officials must be able to provide excellent customer service while working with staff, coaches, parents, and players.

Locations: This position requires traveling to trainings, staff meetings and game sites.

Shift Range: Saturdays 8:30am- 4:30pm.
