The Position

Job Appointment: Regular, Full Time

Work Schedule: Tuesday – Saturday, 8 am – 5 pm with evenings and Sundays intermittently

Work Location: In Person at Delta Park Sports Office, 10850 N Denver Ave, Portland, OR 97217 and multiple satellite locations throughout the city.

About This Position

Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) manages a dynamic and diverse system of community assets, including 300 sports fields and courts, community centers, aquatic facilities, public golf courses, decorative and interactive fountains, Portland International Raceway, and a wide range of recreational and cultural programming. These offerings include arts and culture programs, sports leagues, summer camps, Free Lunch Play, concerts and movies in the park, classes, drop-in activities, and special events.

This position plays a key role in delivering high-quality sports programming across Portland. This position focuses on the planning, development, and execution of sports leagues, tournaments, camps, clinics, and outdoor running events for participants of all ages. Core program areas include youth basketball and volleyball leagues, multi-sport tournaments, and community running events such as 5Ks and cross country meets.

This role operates across a variety of venues, including parks, schools, and community centers, and requires regular collaboration with internal teams, external partners, and community stakeholders.

The ideal candidate is skilled in managing complex, multi-site programs and demonstrates strong abilities in program planning, operations, safety management, and fiscal oversight. They are adaptable, community-focused, and proactive in researching and implementing innovative sports programming. Success in this role also requires the ability to support daily program operations, establish consistent program standards, and build strong, professional relationships with staff and partners.

As a Recreation Coordinator II, You Will

  • Plan and coordinate the citywide Goldenball Youth Basketball League (over 220 teams at locations throughout the city.)
  • Hire, train, and schedule lead officials, sports officials, and event staff. Oversee and complete all aspects of league development and day to day operations
  • Coordinate and provide on-site support for large-scale sports tournaments at Delta Park and sites throughout the city.
  • Plan and coordinate fall and spring volleyball leagues
  • Plan and coordinate the 5K Fun Run Series
  • Deliver inclusive, high-quality sports programming across the city
  • Collaborate with community partners to expand access to sports

The Following Minimum Qualifications Are Required For This Position

  • Experience developing, coordinating, and managing sports leagues, tournaments, camps, and community events across multiple sites, including recruiting and training staff and officials, using sports administration software, and delivering programs that are safe and inclusive for diverse populations.
  • Experience establishing effective working relationships with staff, partners, schools, and the public while collaborating across organizations to implement sports programs and navigating high-conflict or dynamic situations with strong communication skills.
  • Experience in training, mentoring, and evaluating sports staff and officials across multiple sites, with knowledge of rules, game management, and current best practices in recreational sports programming.
  • Experience managing complex administrative tasks across multiple programs and sites, including scheduling, recordkeeping, data management, and use of sports administration software, with strong attention to detail and the ability to balance competing priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team by fostering open communication, providing constructive feedback, and supporting a respectful and inclusive environment, while also executing responsibilities independently with sound decision-making.
