Community Center Site Programmer II (35 Hour Permanent Position) - Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department

About the City of Portland Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department:

The Portland Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Department is comprised of 160 full-time and over 250 seasonal staff dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Portland, Maine. They achieve this by operating cultural venues, running community programs (including Before and After School, Swim Lessons, and Senior Adult programs), and maintaining public buildings, waterfront infrastructure, 70 parks, 40 miles of trails, 13 cemeteries, and 30 playgrounds. Their diverse team, including Park Maintainers, Lifeguards, Event Managers, Horticulturalists, and many others, works collaboratively to provide spaces and opportunities for social connection, recreation, and community development.

About the Program:

Our Community Center Recreation Program is designed to actively involve and stimulate children, providing time and space to explore and grow. With a variety of group and individual activities, our program focuses on character development, physical fitness, health and wellness, reading, and of course, fun!

Job Summary:

Portland Recreation is seeking a Community Center site staff to join our Recreation programs, which offers exciting and enriching activities for all levels! Whether it's helping run a youth clinic, working the scoreboard or refereeing basketball, overseeing a Community Center Site for rentals or drop in programs, we have plenty of opportunities.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Greet visitors, answer inquiries in person and via phone/email, provide program information.
  • Prepare rooms, arrange tables and chairs, and set up audio-visual or recreational equipment for classes, meetings, and special events.
  • Monitor common areas to ensure patron safety, enforce facility rules, and handle opening and closing/locking procedures for the building.
  • Collect drop-in fees or program payments, keeps records of fees and payments collected in MyRec software .


Required Skills & Experience:

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to maintain order and enforce rules and regulations and to impart enthusiasm in a positive and productive atmosphere.
  • Knowledge of a variety of recreational activities including games, sports, arts, crafts and group activities. Ability to direct such activities.
  • Initiative and willingness to learn a variety of additional recreational activities.
  • Valid Class C driver’s license with good driving record
  • Must have and maintain First Aid /CPR/AEDcertifications or be able to obtain within the 6 month probationary period.


Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Experience working with children and with youth programs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public.
  • Prior experience leading or supervising staff.
  • Knowledge of a variety of games, sports, and leisure activities.


Expected Hours/Schedule:

Hours of work vary based on the duration of the program. Many programs run during the week in the evening, or weekends.

Salary & Benefits:

This is a union position, CEBA Grade 9, with a starting pay range of $22.44-$25.22 per hour, based on relevant years of experience.
