The City of Port Townsend is recruiting to fill one opening in the Planning & Community Development Department. The position may be filled at any of the levels described below, depending on qualifications. Complete job descriptions are available here.

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Building Official, performs front counter customer service for building and land use permitting. This includes reviewing, accepting, distributing, documenting and maintaining departmental information, reports, plans, specifications, applications, permits and inspections according to established guidelines. This position helps explain procedures, related codes and ordinances to the public and to other partner agencies.

Permit Tech I (Permit Technician)

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and five years of increasingly responsible administrative work experience, including demonstrated experience in office procedures, record-keeping, computers and administrative
  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks under deadlines.

Preferred

  • Associate degree or two years of college-level coursework.
  • Experience in planning/development services, public works, municipal or public sector
  • Experience providing support to a division or department director in a highly visible agency or office.
  • Valid WA State driver's license and ability to maintain a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier.

Base Pay Range: $27.22-31.13

Total Pay Range:  $26.48-34.87 including maximum potential longevity

 

Permit Tech II (Permit Coordinator)

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and six years of increasingly responsible work experience in planning/development services or public works environments including demonstrated experience in permitting, customer service, electronic document management, office procedures, record-keeping, computers and administrative
  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks under deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree or two years of college-level coursework.
  • Experience providing support to a division or department director in a highly visible agency or office.
  • Valid WA State driver's license and ability to maintain a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier.

Base Pay Range: $27.72-31.39 (2024 rates are in effect until the new Collective Bargaining Agreement is fully signed)

Total Pay Range: $27.72-35.16 including maximum potential longevity

 

Permit Tech III (Development Project Administrator)

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and seven years of increasingly responsible work experience in planning/development services or public works environments, including demonstrated experience in permitting, customer service, electronic document management, office procedures, record-keeping, computers and administrative
  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks under deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree or two years of college-level coursework.
  • Experience providing support to a division or department director in a highly visible agency or office.
  • Valid WA State driver's license and ability to maintain a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier.

Base Pay Range: $29.86-33.89 (2024 rates are in effect until the new Collective Bargaining Agreement is fully signed)

Total Pay Range: $29.86-37.96 including maximum potential longevity

 

This position may be eligible for the additional compensation listed below. Details can be found in the Collective Bargaining Agreement:

  • Longevity pay on a graduated schedule starting at 2% after 5 years up to 12% after 25 years
  • Remote plant operations pay
  • Two-hour response pay
  • Phone-watch pay
  • Overtime pay
  • Compensatory time
  • Jury duty pay at regular rate during service
  • Call-back pay
  • Stand-by pay
  • Mandatory safety shoe allowance
  • Prescription safety glasses allowance, if required for job

* Teamsters initiation fee is $100 and monthly dues are 2.25 of hourly wage x the base hourly rate rounded to the nearest dollar.
