Under close supervision assisting other personnel, performs entry-level duties semi-skilled and unskilled maintenance as assigned to perform general maintenance and construction work of all City owned facilities and structures in one or more craft or trades for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, site, grounds repairs; and performs related duties as assigned. The Facilities Maintenance Worker I is the entry-level class in the Facilities Maintenance Technician series with a minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience.  Initially under close supervision, performs the more routine duties while learning City policies and procedures and becoming familiar with the variety of departmental systems and practices. Facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City.


The starting hourly rate for this position is $22.28- $25.62 depending on qualifications. 

This position will be subject to a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) security clearance in addition to the City of Port St Lucie’s Police Department background check prior to appointment.

This position is considered an "Essential Position" for the purpose of Emergency Management.  Emergency duties will be assigned as needed.   This position requires 24 hours a day, 7 days per week availability during City of Port St Lucie emergencies, as determined by City Administrators, Emergency Manager or City Officials. 

The following duties are illustrative for this position.  The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. 

  • Keeps the mission, vision, and values of the City of Port St. Lucie at the forefront of decision making and action; builds strategic and collaborative relationships and interacts with others in a way that builds confidence and trust; provides excellent customer service by taking action to accomplish objectives, maintaining high levels of work and productivity by generating innovative solutions to work situations.
  • Provides assistance for general building maintenance and repairs including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and site or grounds repairs.
  • Provides assistance for plumbing duties including repairing, replacing plumbing fixtures and unclogging of sinks and toilets.
  • Provides assistance for preparation and painting of interior and exterior of buildings including joint sealing.
  • Provides assistance for repairs or replaces window glass, doors, drywall, enclosures, flooring, partitions, and shelves. 
  • Performs pressure washing of buildings and sidewalks.
  • Operates and performs preventative maintenance on equipment. 
  • Completes Work Order requests as directed and completes data entry in Work Order program electronically including developing and responding to Email.
  • Purchases and picks up materials as needed. Oversee contractors when services are required.
  • Keep shop, equipment, and tools in clean and safe condition. 
  • Maintain accurate, updated records or work performed.
  • Inspect ditches, grounds, drainage areas, parking lots, and roadside shoulders for trash and debris, pick up and dispose of daily.
  • Replace light bulbs and tubes.
  • Inspect fire, burglar, electrical panels, and janitorial closets.
  • Assist with relocation of furnishings, such as desks, tables, chairs, file cabinets, etc.
  • Move, install, assemble, and repair furniture and equipment.
  • Hang televisions, pictures, mirrors, bulletin boards, screens, dispensers, and other items. 
  • Set up chairs and tables for meetings.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on equipment. Perform visual inspections and complete checklists.
  • Perform irrigation system repairs.
  • Assists in hurricane and storm preparation.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required. A minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience in construction, repairs, and maintenance for carpentry, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, site and grounds repairs is required.  


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Possession of valid driver’s license and maintenance of clean driving record required with the ability to obtain a valid Florida driver’s license within 30 days from date of hire. 
  • FDLE-CJIS Certification required for employment. Employees must attain CJIS Certification prior to hire date and must maintain certification in good standing consistently and without lapse.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of general repair and maintenance techniques to assist in keeping building systems including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and sites in high-quality repair.
  • Knowledge of standards and practices of the building maintenance trade. General knowledge of wood and metal types, tools, and fasteners.
  • Use of a variety of vehicles, equipment, power tools and hand tools including motorized, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment.
  • Experience with precision measuring instruments. Ability to maintain records and reports.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and the ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to work primarily independent, as well as in a group setting.
  • Knowledge of the safe use of janitorial supplies.
  • Ability to quickly learn janitorial procedures.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment required to perform duties.
  • Skill in the operation and preventive maintenance of equipment and related tools.
  • Ability to operate equipment required to perform duties.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor under various weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
  • Ability to focus on the positive in every situation.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, chemicals, airborne particles and risk of electrical shock.  The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, high/precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals, vibration, and uneven surfaces. The employee works with potentially hazardous power tools and is exposed to heights up to 30 feet. 

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The position is fast paced.
